A La Costa Canyon High School teacher has been jailed for allegedly possessing sexual abuse material involving children, officials said Wednesday.
Joseph Anthony Zyburt, 55, was booked into county jail in Vista on Wednesday morning. A criminal complaint indicates Zyburt is charged with felony counts of possessing child sex abuse material on his desktop computer and cell phone, plus an attempted possession count for allegedly trying to purchase such material sometime between October 2024 and January 2025.
The arrest of Zyburt, a mathematics instructor at the Carlsbad secondary school, stemmed from a multi-agency investigation, according to California Attorney General Rob Bonta’s office.
Subsequent searches of electronic devices used by the suspect “further confirmed his possession and attempted possession” of the illicit materials, according to the attorney general.
Zyburt was being held without bail pending arraignment, scheduled for Friday.
He was not listed in the teacher’s directory on the school’s website as of Wednesday morning.
The San Dieguito Union High School District said in a statement that Zyburt was immediately removed from the classroom and placed on administrative leave last fall after law enforcement officials informed the district in September that an investigation was being opened.
District officials were not informed of the specifics of the investigation at the time, according to the statement, which said: “This news is deeply disturbing and the district hopes justice will be served.”
The investigation was conducted by the state Department of Justice, the FBI and the Carlsbad Police Department, according to Bonta’s office.
“When someone who is entrusted with the care of our youth is revealed to be harboring child sexual abuse material, it is not only a crime, but also a betrayal of trust,” Bonta said.
“Protecting the most vulnerable among us is not just a responsibility of this office, it is a moral obligation,” he added.
“My office stands ready and fully committed to continuing this fight with the help of our law enforcement partners. We will work tirelessly to hold offenders accountable and to ensure that our children are protected, supported, and given the safe future they deserve.”
