After founders Ekko Astralposted numerous teases online, the band behind Pitchfork’s Best Rock Album of 2024 finally let the secret out: the full lineup to LIBERATION WEEKEND II, the sequel to last year’s DIY trans-rights music festival in Washington D.C.
The 2026 installment will take place on April 24-26 at the Black Cat, an independent music venue first established in 1993, and at Transmission, a venue that opened last October in what used to be the city’s fabled Rock and Roll Hotel. Tickets are on sale now.
Friday, April 24, will see Against Me! frontwoman Laura Jane Graceas the night's headliner, performing along with Snowing, Gladie, Spring Silver, THISDOGWILLHUNT and Eevie Echoes & The Locations.
Ekko Astral will headline Saturday, April 25, in what is billed as Ekko Astral & Friends. The night will also feature performances from noise punk legends Pissed Jeans, Bambara, Ragana, MX Lonely, and Adult Human Females.
The climax of Liberation Weekend II will feature indie punk rockers Illuminati Hotties, who will play their 2020 album, Free I.H., in full. Ezra Furman, Pool Kids, Pom Pom Squad, Pretty Bitter, and Pink Lemon will also perform that night.
View this post on InstagramThat’s not all! While Black Cat will host the main stage, a trio of day showcases will go down at Transmission. “You will be able to see nonstop sick sets with minimal, if any, overlap, hopping back and forth between two of the most incredible venues our city has to offer,” Ekko Astrail said online.
Crush Fund, Cryptid Summer, OK Cuddle, Somebody’s Daughter, Soul Meets Body and Ultra Deluxe are scheduled to perform on Saturday. Peach Rings, Hit Like A Girl, Jade Weapon, Latchkey Kids, Motocrossed and Tripper will perform on Sunday (April 26).
Proceeds from Liberation Weekend will go to the trans aid organizations Gender Liberation Movement and No More Dysphoria.
“We cannot rely on institutions to save us. We can only rely on ourselves and the community we have to fight for trans America — and that now includes throwing a badass three-day benefit music festival,” said Ekko Astral leader Jael Holzman in a press release. “Let this incredible lineup be seen as a way of using art as a cultural battering ram against the people trying to erase us.”
There will be afterparties with lineups yet to be unveiled. Plus, more performers can join the party. Last year, comedian Charlie Giard hosted day 1, while cartoonist Mattie Lubchansky, comedian Josh Gondelman, and writer Rax King hosted night 2. Rax also had a kickoff event, hosting a conversation with writer Nikko Stratis about her new memoir, The Dad Rock That Made Me A Woman (h/t Swim Into The Sound).
The news wasn’t all joyous. On the same day that Ekko Astral announced the lineup, they revealed that longtime bassist Miri Tyler’s final performance would be at Liberation Weekend.
“She told us this was to focus more fully and completely on her life at home, as well as her work in Pretty Bitter and her solo project — both of which have also taken off,” wrote the band in a statement.
“Ekko Astral isn’t going anywhere,” the band added. “And neither is Miri. We implore you to still support her in all of her musical endeavors. And we hope you join us at Liberation Weekend for a heroine’s farewell.”
Liberation Weekend II Passes are on sale now.
