The Alabama Holocaust Education Center and the Birmingham Jewish Community Relations Council organized an effort to illuminate landmarks across Jefferson County with yellow lights on Tuesday evening to commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
Homewood, Hoover, Vestavia Hills, Mountain Brook, Birmingham and Irondale, Alabama each lit their city halls in yellow for the day. The cities also issued proclamations formally recognizing Jan. 27 as a day of remembrance.
“The act of ‘lighting up yellow’ on this day serves as a visible symbol of remembrance, hope, and solidarity illuminating the City of Irondale in honor of the six million Jews and millions of others whose lives were taken, and in tribute to those who survived to share,” said James D. Stewart Jr., mayor of Irondale, in a proclamation on Jan. 6.
Alabama joined 20 other states as a part of the Light Up America Yellow coalition, which honors the over 11 million victims of the Holocaust through illuminating public spaces nationwide in yellow.
Lisa Bachman, executive director of the Alabama Holocaust Education Center, said yellow represents the yellow stars the Jewish people were required to wear during the Holocaust, which were a “symbol of dehumanization” that has now been reclaimed as a “model of resilience and remembrance.”
The Vulcan statue, the city symbol of Birmingham since the 1930s, was among the landmarks illuminated in yellow.
Community members gathered around the statue for a moment of reflection and a performance with a violin that was played during the Holocaust.
“Everyone was immediately supportive and interested in recognizing this day,” said Margaret Norman, director of the Birmingham Jewish Community Relations Council. “It’s been really heartening for us to see.”
