The nature of the offseason in the last five, ten years is such that so much of it bleeds into January that the advent of Spring Training feels a little less like this desperately-long-anticipated, far-off event, and more like the next phase of the offseason. Here we are, on the doorstep of February, and the Chicago Cubs are still popping up in fairly significant free agent rumors (Zac Gallen today, for example).
That is not to say we don’t eagerly greet the arrival of Spring Training as the ceremonial start of the new baseball season. We do. I will. It’s just that we don’t have over a month to just sit around and wait, knowing the roster was fully completed a long time ago. You could argue that the slow drip of the offseason is a bad thing in the attention economy, and I really do wish the Winter Meetings were more of a signings and trade extravaganza event. But you could also argue that the way it’s become so spread out means we avoid the dog days of winter, staring out the window and dreaming of spring, so to speak. I like when there are fresh things to discuss.
To that end, as I’ve been thinking a lot this week about all the free agents who still need to sign – particularly pitchers, who generally prefer to ramp up with their new club/coaches/catchers/etc. – it has started to feel like Spring Training is EXTREMELY right around the corner. It never really felt that far off for we Cubs fans, given how much of the meat of the club’s offseason waited for January. So I wouldn’t say it snuck up on me, but it did make me want to spotlight it given the calendar.
Chicago Cubs pitchers and catchers report, officially, to Spring Training in Mesa, Arizona two weeks from today. As we know from years past and from pictures and videos, many Cubs pitchers and catchers (and position players) have been out in Mesa already, and many others will arrive long before February 11. It’s all juuuuuust about here.
Speaking of which, I really, really like this year’s Cubs roster. I think it’s been constructed quite well, balancing veteran steadiness with youthful upside. I think it is deep in almost every area. I think the pitching is strong in the rotation and the bullpen. I think the defense should be very good again. I think the offense could once again be a top-ten unit. This is a group that I’m very eager to see all together in Arizona, and it made me very happy to think today about how I really don’t have to wait all that long to see it.
