80s Rock Legend Announces Update on Autobiography Amid Cancer Battle

Great White’s Mark Kendall is turning his personal struggle into powerful storytelling.

The 68-year-old guitarist is looking back on his journey, reflecting on his lifelong love and passion for music and the experiences that shaped his career and identity beyond the stage.

Even in the face of serious health challenges, as he deals with his cancer battle, the iconic musician is opening up through one of the most personal projects of his career, his upcoming autobiography.

In an interview with rock radio station 101 WRIF, Kendall revealed that he was initially approached to work on a book that focused on being a musician and the techniques of being a guitarist.

However, as he worked on the project, it turned out to be an intimate memoir that centered on his life.

"I'm trying not to make it a real dirt book, but some feelings might get hurt," he shared, noting that his ghostwriter, Jeffrey Mangus, stirred up memories.

This unexpected move prompted him to revisit a difficult and emotional part of his life, his childhood.

Terry Ilous and Mark Kendall of Great White performs at DTE Energy Music Theater on August 28, 2014 in Clarkston, Michigan.

Creating an autobiography is not just about what’s written on the pages but also about finding a catchy and fitting title that clearly reflects the message of the book.

Kendall chose Soul of a Man because creating it felt like baring his soul and allowing himself to be completely open and honest about his life.

"I was trying to think of a title for it, and I ended up calling it Soul of a Man because I'm pretty much burying my soul on this thing,” he mentioned, adding, “I'm going all the way back to childhood, telling every story you can imagine, you know, with the guitar in there."

The member of the hard rock band revealed his cancer diagnosis in November 2025.

Kendall broke the news on social media, sharing the details regarding his Stage 4 kidney cancer, which he had learned about “a few months ago.”

“I wanted to wait to go public until I knew a little more about it,” he added.

At the time, he revealed that he was undergoing treatment and receiving radiation treatment to manage his cancer.

“Just to give you an update, the tumor has shrunk from 13 centimeters to 8, so I’m going in the right direction with my first scan,” he shared. “There isn’t a cure for cancer, but what I have is manageable. I have the best doctors in the world and one of them invented Immunotherapy which is the treatment I’m on.”

Two months after going public about his health status, the Great White guitarist shared that his condition has been showing major improvement.

Calling it “good news,” he revealed that there was “no sign of disease spreading” in his body.

“When this started, the tumor in my kidney was 13 centimeters. My first scan revealed it shrank to 11,” he shared on Facebook. “The 2nd one it went to 8 centimeters. I just had a CT scan 2 nights ago and it’s now 5 centimeters with no sign of disease spread anywhere else. This is fantastic news that I’m managing the tumor and the immunotherapy treatment is working!”

He went on to thank fans and all those who prayed for him and reached out with messages of encouragement and support.
