Will there be a Wonder Man season 2? Latest news and speculation

As Marvel’s latest character makes his small-screen debut in the hugely meta Disney+ series Wonder Man, many fans are already wondering whether the show could be granted the (very rare) greenlight for a second season.

Starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and fan favourite Sir Ben Kingsley, the series follows up-and-coming actor Simon Williams as he attempts to make his mark in Hollywood. Hoping to land an audition for the lead role in an in-universe reboot of Wonder Man, Simon enlists the help of the hapless Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley).

Marvel live-action Disney+ shows have often been one-and-done affairs, typically designed either to introduce new characters into the MCU or to further explore existing ones in standalone - or spinoff - stories. Series such as Wandavision, Echo, Ironheart, She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel, Agatha All Along and Moon Knight all fall into this category.

Very rarely have viewers been rewarded with a second instalment, with Loki proving the most notable exception. Wonder Man was originally conceived as a limited series - but could the much-praised dynamic between its two leads help it buck the trend?

Read on for everything you need to know about the potential for a Wonder Man season 2. We’ll keep this page updated with the latest news on a potential second season as soon as anything is announced.

Will there be a second series of Wonder Man on Disney+?

Hollywood satire meets superhero origin — Wonder Man was originally devised as a limited series, with just one season planned.

Following the debut of the first season on Disney+, there has been no official announcement from Marvel Studios or Disney+ regarding a follow-up.

However, with it’s meta format and strong central performances, the door may not be completely closed for Simon and Trevor. According to Brad Winderbaum, Head of Marvel Television and animation, the decision ultimately comes down to audience response and whether the show actually finds an audience on the streaming platform.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly ahead of New York Comic-Con, Winderbaum explained: "Season 2 could be on the table if people watch. If it's the only Wonder Man story, it really stands on its own as a beautiful piece. But I anticipate that when people get to the end of this story, they're gonna want more. And I hope that's what happens."

He also addressed the wider challenges facing Marvel’s Disney+ output, noting that many early shows were designed as limited series featuring "characters that could bounce back and forth between the movies and TV shows". However, complications arose when it came to producing second seasons, as "the deal structure became really expensive, frankly".

As a result, Marvel shifted focus toward animated projects designed for long-term runs, such as X-Men ‘97 and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, which Winderbaum said are intended to "come out annually for a number of years".

Still, some projects appear to sit in a grey area. He added: "I would put Marvel Zombies on that list, I'd put Wonder Man on that list where we have to see."

For now, it seems Marvel is waiting to see how Wonder Man performs with audiences.

When could Wonder Man season 2 be released?

At this stage, it’s difficult to predict when a second season could arrive on Disney+, especially as the first has only just debuted.

Wonder Man was first announced back in June 2022, but was impacted by the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, which temporarily halted its production. As a result, the series has taken longer than initially expected to hit the small screen.

If a second season were to be greenlit - and didn’t face similar disruptions - the turnaround could be faster. Even so, a release sometime in early 2028 feels like a realistic estimate, but, of course, that is just speculation for now, as Marvel is still waiting to see how season 1 performs.

Who from Wonder Man season 1 would return for a second series?

Should Wonder Man receive a second season, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Ben Kingsley would be natural candidates to return, given Simon and Trevor’s central dynamic - though scheduling would, of course, play a role, especially if there are more Thursday Murder Club sequels announced from Netflix.

There is also the possibility that Marvel chooses to continue using the characters elsewhere in the MCU rather than announcing a second season. Trevor Slattery is already an established MCU figure, appearing in both the Iron Man series and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, making him an easy fit for future projects.

For now, however, Marvel appears to be keeping its options open. As Winderbaum suggested, Wonder Man is designed to stand alone if necessary, as a "beautiful piece". It certainly seems as though the head of Marvel TV and animation himself hopes we see more from the pair, let's just hope that audiences feel the same.

Wonder Man is now streaming on Disney+.
