Hamilton hails ‘pretty solid’ first day on track despite wet conditions

Lewis Hamilton was upbeat rather than frustrated after a rain-drenched first day of running with Ferrari in Barcelona, describing the opening day of the test as “pretty solid” despite conditions that left him chasing grip rather than lap times.

The Briton took over driving duties on Tuesday afternoon after Charles Leclerc completed the morning programme, but any hopes of dry-weather exploration quickly faded as rain swept across the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

While the weather limited Ferrari’s options, Hamilton stressed that the wet conditions still offered meaningful opportunities to learn about the car and extract valuable data.

“It was very challenging, it started raining at 10:30, so obviously Charles had a little bit of dry running,” he said.

“But then it's been wet all afternoon, so figuring out how to get the tyres working, it was really productive.”

Rather than being curtailed by the conditions, Ferrari pressed on and managed to accumulate a healthy number of laps, even with a red flag interrupting the session.

“I think we got 120 laps or something like that - given it's in the wet conditions, and we had a red flag, I think that's pretty solid,” Hamilton said.

“So [I'm] really proud of everyone back at the factory for getting the car to this point.”

Solid Start Amid Sweeping Regulation Changes

The 2026 season marks a major technical reset for Formula 1, offering Ferrari a chance to rebound after a disappointing 2025 campaign and close the gap to the front of the grid. For Hamilton, the lack of early drama was a reassuring sign.

“We got a lot of information on the car today, we definitely need to keep it up. Lots and lots to do, but a good first day,” he said.

Reflecting on the scale of the rule changes — and how easily things could have gone wrong — Hamilton welcomed the calm start to Ferrari’s programme.

“It could be so much worse,” he added. “It's such a big regulation change. There were no major issues.

“It's just small little increments that we are trying to improve on. I think it's great. We just need to try and get some more days like this.”

With mileage banked, data gathered and optimism intact, Ferrari’s Barcelona test may have begun under grey skies – but for Hamilton, it was a solid platform to build from as preparations for the new season continue.
