Egypt targets global auto giants to localize industry, boost exports

The state attaches great importance to localizing the automotive industry by attracting major global manufacturers, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said on Tuesday, January 27, 2026.

This is part of Egypt’s National Automotive Industry Development Programme, with a specific focus on the production of electric vehicles (EVs) and their components to align with global shifts toward clean energy, the premier added during a meeting with the ministers of industry, finance and foreign trade to discuss the state’s plan to build a major industrial base capable of meeting domestic demand and expanding in export markets.

According to Cabinet Spokesman Mohamed al-Homsani, this plan seeks to enhance the competitiveness of the Egyptian industry regionally and internationally.

The meeting also touched on current market share of electric vehicles and projected growth rates.

Madbouly reviewed investment offers from major international companies in this strategic sector, as well as the incentives and facilitations offered by the government to global firms to deepen local manufacturing and support sustainable transportation.

The meeting addressed strategies to increase the competitiveness of Egypt’s free zones to drive exports and lure foreign investments, the spokesman noted.

According to data presented during the meeting, the number of projects in Egyptian free zones reached 1,237, with a total capital of $14.3 billion as of October 2025, providing approximately 245,000 direct jobs.

Egypt’s nine public free zones host 1,019 projects spanning industrial, storage, and service sectors, Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade Hassan al-Khatib said during the meeting.

Khatib reported that total investment costs for free zone projects reached $38.5 billion by October 2025, highlighting export performance during 2024, with commodity exports hitting $11 billion, service exports $7 billion and petroleum exports $6.5 billion.

He said the government had identified several priority activities for free zones that align with the country’s industrial strategy, including information technology and software development, pharmaceutical and medical supplies, automotive components, food processing, textiles and ready-made garments, and logistics services, as well as port development and energy generation solutions.
