Nine North Carolina educators have been named regional Teachers of the Year, state education officials announced Tuesday.
The finalists represent every region of the state and were selected for their leadership, classroom innovation, and community service. One will be named the 2026 North Carolina Teacher of the Year during an April 24 awards ceremony at The Umstead Hotel and Spa in Cary.
“These nine individuals represent the very best of public education,” State Superintendent Maurice “Mo” Green said in a statement, noting that their work often extends into coaching, school-wide planning, and mentorship. “Their impact goes far beyond the walls of their own classrooms.”
The program, which began in 1970, is a partnership between the N.C. Department of Public Instruction and the Burroughs Wellcome Fund.
Beyond the title, the winner becomes a prominent voice for the state’s roughly 90,000 teachers. The honoree will spend the upcoming school year traveling the state as a professional ambassador and will serve as an advisor to the North Carolina State Board of Education. In recent years, educators in this role have used the platform to lobby for increased school funding.
This year’s finalists include a reading specialist who helped her school resume classes after Hurricane Helene in 2024, a multilingual specialist who launched a family outreach program for English-learner households, and a STEM teacher working to earn her campus a state “School of Distinction” title.
The cohort also features a history teacher who led a schoolwide civic engagement campaign during the 2024 election, an elementary teacher who developed a technology-based model to individualize learning, and a math teacher recognized for using real-world scenarios to make the subject more accessible.
