Will Melania Trump’s $75 million movie play to empty theaters?

At CMX Cinemas in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, near Melania Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home, tickets were selling pretty briskly this week for Friday’s cinematic release of “Melania,” the first lady’s big-budget documentary about her return to the White House last year.

About half the seats for the screenings in the small, 126-seat theater at CMX Cinemas were already sold as of Tuesday. But elsewhere around the country, Americans were not rushing to movie theater websites to buy advanced seats, which was leading to the first lady’s “vanity” project being “roasted online,” according to the Daily Beast.

The film is opening in around 1,500 to 2,000 theaters nationwide Friday, according to the Daily Beast. That’s a wide release, which is unusual for a documentary, a genre that usually plays in arthouse theaters or on streaming platforms.

On X Monday, President Trump advised Americans to “get your tickets today” for his wife’s “MUST WATCH” movie. And, he claimed without evidence, that tickets were “selling out, FAST!” He and his wife were planning to walk the red carpet at a gala premiere Thursday night at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., — weeks after Trump added his own name to the historic performing arts building.

But many people were not heeding Trump’s advice to get tickets ASAP, not even in other parts of Florida, and some social media users enjoyed the apparent lack of interest in “Melania” by posting screenshots of cinema showtimes revealing swaths of unsold seats, the Daily Beast said.

“Not a single ticket sold for the opening night 9:55 p.m. showing of ‘Melania’ at the busiest movie theater in the metro Jacksonville area,” Travis Akers, a former naval intelligence officer turned community activist, posted on X Monday evening. He also shared an image of an empty booking screen. As of Tuesday afternoon, just two seats had been sold.

Akers followed up by asking, “How many days until we learn that the RNC bought movie tickets for the Melania movie just to fluff the numbers?”

There were lots of seats still available for Friday’s five “Melania” screenings at the AMC Lincoln Square 13 in the Trumps’ former hometown of New York City — and where Melania Trump still reportedly lives part time.

But there’s at least one multiplex in America, where seats already were almost sold out for all of Friday’s screenings. It was the Regal Gallery Place in Washington, D.C., less than a mile from the White House. Perhaps the Republican National Committee had followed Akers’ prediction to fluff up the documentary’s numbers — or Trump’s loyal employees in different federal offices were planning watch parties.

Meanwhile, journalist Mike Rothschild, an expert on QAnon and other conspiracies, shared screenshots showing empty “Melania” screenings at multiple theaters in California, the Daily Beast reported.

“Four theaters in the LA area, five total tickets sold for Friday night MELANIA showings,” Rothschild wrote. “AMC in Orange County, Saturday night, zero MELANIA tickets sold.

“These are ZYZZYX ROAD numbers,” he added, referring to the infamous 2006 crime thriller, starring Katherine Heigl and Tom Sizemore, which at the time had the lowest-grossing opening day in U.S. box office history after earning just $30.

Matthew Belloni at Puck offered a more encouraging assessment of “Melania’s” opening weekend. Yes, he said, presales were unsurprisingly falling fairly strictly along red/blue lines. But he added that the first lady’s film could gross around $5 million in the United States and Canada. He said: “$5 million would actually be a pretty good opening number for a documentary in this theatrical climate.”

Then again, earning $5 million means that the movie won’t be anywhere near profitable, considering that Amazon MGM Studios spent $40 million to Melania Trump to produce the film and another $35 million for marketing and distribution, according to CNN. Belloni said that such an amount for marketing and distribution is “insanely high for a documentary,” but he expected that Amazon probably figured that spending so much would be worth it to “keep Trump happy” and to ensure he doesn’t get upset if “his wife’s movie doesn’t open.”
