The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools system announced that Wednesday, Jan. 28 will be another remote learning day following Winter Storm Fern.
In a Facebook post, the system cited “lingering icy spots and overnight freezing temperatures” as the primary factors leading to its decision.
“While a lot of roads have been cleared and melting is happening, it’s not just about streets,” the post read. “Neighborhood bus stops (especially in shaded areas), school parking lots, sidewalks, walkways and driveways are not entirely ready for a safe school day. However, our teams will be at schools tomorrow to prepare for a safe re-opening as soon as possible.”
Tuesday was the first remote learning day used by the school system this academic year. Wednesday will mark the second, meaning it will have three remote-learning days left. Monday was a previously scheduled teacher work day.
One difference in planned instruction between Tuesday and Wednesday is that middle and high school students will be expected to attend synchronous class sessions rather than working on asynchronous assignments. Pre-K and elementary school students’ instructions remain the same as Tuesday.
All afterschool activities in the district have been canceled.
As of 3:25 p.m. Tuesday, Orange County Schools and Chatham County Schools have not released plans for instruction on Wednesday.
