GENEVA — Saudi Arabia, represented by the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA), has strengthened its international scientific presence by officially joining the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA).JECFA announced the appointment of Najla Al-Harbi, head of the Chemical Risks Section in the Food Sector at the SFDA, to the committee’s roster of experts.The appointment highlights the Kingdom’s growing role in international food safety governance and reflects the advanced scientific expertise of Saudi professionals in risk assessment.JECFA is a global scientific body jointly administered by the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization.It evaluates the safety of food additives, contaminants, and veterinary drug residues, and establishes key health benchmarks such as Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) and Tolerable Daily Intake (TDI), which underpin Codex Alimentarius standards and international food safety regulations.Through its participation in the committee, the SFDA will contribute to shaping science-based global food standards and aligning national regulatory frameworks with internationally recognized practices.The move also reinforces international confidence in the Kingdom’s food safety system and its regulatory oversight.The SFDA said the milestone supports its strategic goals to advance risk assessment methodologies, build national scientific capabilities, and enhance evidence-based regulatory decision-making.The participation is expected to improve the efficiency of food safety systems, strengthen consumer confidence, and support the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030.
