Bulls Weekly Preview: Two Back-To-Backs in Loaded Pre-Deadline Schedule

Riding a wave of good vibes thanks to an ongoing four-game win streak and the fun of Derrick Rose‘s jersey retirement celebration, the Chicago Bulls face a tough test this week. The Bulls are set to play five games in seven nights, including two back-to-back slates. Three of those games will be played against the frisky Miami Heat.

For whatever reason, Billy Donovan has kept Josh Giddey on the bench during his two games back from a hamstring strain, rather than offering up a quicker hook for him in the starting lineup. One assumes that will change at some point this week, but only time will tell. Keep in mind we’re less than two weeks away from the NBA Trade Deadline, so who knows which players might not be available/be benched for “organizational reasons” before the end of the week.

    Meet The Bulls’ Opponents

1/26 vs Lakers: Buzz has been swirling that Los Angeles Lakers current team governor and (now) minority owner Jeanie Buss has long been frustrated with aging superstar LeBron James’ ego — to the point where James subsequently clapped back on those rumors. The on-court product hasn’t been particularly exciting to talk about, as the club’s awful defense and inconsistent offense have been exposed with Austin Reaves missing the last month due to a calf injury. The James/Luka Doncic pairing clearly hasn’t worked to this point.

Los Angeles has gone just 4-6 across its last 10 contests, and were it not for scary injuries to Jimmy Butler and Devin Booker, and chaos in Minnesota, they would be in jeopardy of slipping into the play-in tournament. This unhappy LA club represents a ripe opportunity for the Bulls to steal another win.

1/28 at Pacers: Why is Indiana the worst team in the NBA by record (10-34) a year after making the NBA Finals? This can’t all be chalked up to Tyrese Haliburton being out and Myles Turner departing in free agency, right? The Pacers were hit by a wave of injuries earlier in the year, but the next-man-up ethos that helped them weather some health storms across their past two seasons is gone. Pascal Siakam is still submitting great individual numbers, but key perimeter pieces Andrew Nembhard, Aaron Nesmith and Bennedict Mathurin — who have all, in fairness, battled injury issues this season — haven’t taken the leaps many were hoping to see.

1/29 vs Heat, 1/31 & 2/1 at Heat: If three games in short turnaround feels odd, a reminder: the game on Thursday night is the rescheduled game from Jan. 8 that was postponed because it was warm and raining outside. It’s now… no longer warm in Chicago. Erik Spoelstra will bring his revised Miami squad to the United Center for the second time this season. And then the action will return to South Beach for back-to-back tilts this weekend.

Miami obliterated the Bulls in Chicago during the two clubs’ first encounter in November, a 143-107 massacre. All-Star shooting guard Tyler Herro has barely played this season, but new addition Norman Powell is having the year of his life (for the second straight season). Bam Adebayo has been solid defensively and disappointing offensively. Second-year center Kel’el Ware looks like a keeper, although he has a hamstring injury and may not play in any of Miami’s three games against the Bulls this week.
