Zak Tell finally tells all.
The vocalist of the Swedish-Norwegian rap metal band Clawfinger spoke with Seb Di Gatto of The Metal Gods Meltdown on Friday about his band's upcoming album, Before We All Die, out on Feb. 20 via Perception. This is their first album in 19 years, and Tell finally revealed why it took so long.
The last time Clawfinger released an album was Like Will Kill You in 2007. After touring for that record and performing at multiple music festivals afterward, the band members started burning out. The metal rock band eventually broke up in 2013, but after a year, they ended up reuniting, then writing songs together and performing at music festivals around Europe again because their managers had pushed them to. This pattern went on for years, and it got to the point where they created enough songs to produce an album.
"We had a Zoom meeting with our manager, and he was, like, 'Guys, I know that you've sort of been getting back into the groove of things, and I know that you have, like, six, seven songs that you've written,'" Tell explained on the podcast. "So he was, like, 'Would you consider writing maybe three more and we could release an album before we all die?' And that is literally where the [new album] title came from."
Now, why exactly did it take 19 years for Clawfinger to release a new album? According to Tell, reality hit all of the members, and making a living off of just music was very difficult. From 1993 to 2008, Clawfinger was the members' main source of income.
"Well, what happened… What didn't happen? Life. When we did our last tour of 2007, at the very tail end of 2007, we already knew that we were running out of money, which happens to people all the time," the musician revealed. "Once we came to 2008, we no longer had that luxury anymore and we had to do what everyone has to do in the end and that is find jobs. And there's nothing unique about that. The reality was that we had to find jobs. All of a sudden, you're stuck in a nine-to-five, Monday to Friday. We also had kids, most of us."
Zak Tell of Clawfinger performs live at the Hellsinki Metal Festival 2023 at Nordis on August 11, 2023 in Helsinki, Finland.Formed in 1989 in Stockholm, Clawfinger are considered pioneers of the rap metal genre. They had their commercial breakthrough in 1993, thanks to their debut album Deaf Dumb Blind. A lot of their music consists of lyrics that tackle politics and racism. So far, the group has released seven studio albums and sold over 1.5 million albums worldwide.
Though they haven't released a new album since 2007, Clawfinger has released multiple singers over the past two decades. In August 2017, they released "Save Our Souls," the first new song in over 10 years for the band. Two years later, they put out "Tear You Down." Last summer, Clawfinger announced they had signed a new record deal with Perception Label and released "Scum."
Clawfinger's current members include Tell, Jocke Skog, Bård Torstensen, André Skaug and Micke Dahlén. Their eighth studio album, Before We All Die, will be out on digital streaming platforms on Feb. 20.
