I know that the big league moves draw most of the attention – and, for good reason, since they are designed to generate most of the big league impact – but I have been very pleased by the Chicago Cubs’ front office continuing to supplement deeper within the organization throughout December and January.
Plenty of reclamation pitching signings, as always, and a number of more development-inclined pitcher signings, too. There was also the Scott Kingery signing late last year as Triple-A depth, and outfielders Chas McCormick and Dylan Carlson over the last week. Old friend Christian Bethancourt has returned, too. Plus you have a handful of waiver claims – Ryan Rolison, Benjamin Cowles, Justin Dean – all rounding out the depth that every organization needs heading into Spring Training.
And, in another deal that may have already happened (sure looks that way!), the Cubs appear to be adding another utility option to the mix:
Haven't seen an official signing yet, but shortstop @karson_simas has been in camp the last several days. Karson previously played in the Red Sox organization. #Cubs pic.twitter.com/dtLwp45eNq
— Rich Biesterfeld (@biest22) January 25, 2026If Rich says Karson Simas has been working out with the Cubs for several days – and we can see in the image that he’s wearing Cubs gear as he does it! – then it’s a pretty good bet that Simas either already has signed, or soon will sign, a minor league deal with the Cubs.
And, like so many of the signings before this one, it’s just about as good as it gets in this category of move.
Karson Simas, 24, was a 2019 Boston Red Sox draft pick out of high school, who had been working his way up through the organization ever since. Although he hasn’t ever really hit, he’s a superior defender at pretty much any position, runs the bases well, and is coming off his best year at the plate (.244/.313/.331/85 wRC+ split between Double-A and Triple-A). Although you couldn’t realistically project him to develop a whole lot more with the Cubs at the plate, it is his first new organization as a pro, and maybe there’s room for growth at the margins. It’s a role player ceiling either way, but you would ideally like to have multiple players at Triple-A who are capable of handling shortstop (and multiple other positions) at a high level in case of emergency.
At the big league level right now, Nico Hoerner is the primary backup at shortstop, by way of Matt Shaw going to second base in that situation. I suspect Shaw would be the option at shortstop after that, but if there were a longer-term injury there in the middle infield for the Cubs, they’re going to want the option of pulling up another shortstop – with Simas in the mix, the Cubs could have three such options, together with Kingery and Cowles. Throw in the fact that Kingery may be able to, and choose to, opt out of his minor league deal at the end of Spring Training, and it’s all the better to have someone like Simas in the mix.
Relatedly: although Jefferson Rojas remains a highly-regarded prospect, it’s possible he won’t leave Double-A this season. Even if he does get the mid-year bump to Triple-A, it’s highly likely the Cubs would prefer for him not to be the emergency shortstop depth at Iowa until and unless he’s ready. That is to say, grabbing as much depth as possible on minor league deals for Iowa right now – while they’re available – seems like a particularly good idea, because we don’t know what’s coming internally for the I-Cubs by midseason.
We’ll see if the Karson Simas deal gets officially reported or confirmed in the coming days. It could be that the Cubs will soon announce their non-roster invites to Spring Training anyway.
