Scottsdale Aquatic Club’s Delaney Barbee has committed to further her academic and athletic career at Arizona State University as a part of the Sun Devil women’s 2027 recruiting class.
I am super excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Arizona State University! I’d like to thank the Lord, my parents, family and friends for all their love and support, and Coach Paul for helping me grow into the athlete I am today. Another big thank you to Coach @sirherb_the3rd and the @sundevilswimdive coaching staff for giving me this amazing opportunity. I am so blessed and forever grateful. I cannot wait to be a Sun Devil! Forks up!
Barbee recently competed at the Speedo Winter Junior Championships in Austin, where she earned her highest finish in the 50 freestyle, clocking a 37th-place effort in 23.20. She also raced in two other sprint free events, finishing 105th in the 100 free (52.06) and 63rd in the 200 free (1:52.96).
Barbee, a native of New River, Ariz, just under 44 miles north of Tempe, has twice been named a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American. She also represents Boulder Creek High School, where, as a junior, Barbee finished with a pair of runner-up finishes at the AIA Division I State Championships. She touched second in both the 50 free (23.30) and 100 free (51.51). The year before, Barbee came away with a pair of sprint free titles at that meet, clocking 22.74 and 50.28 in the 50 and 100 free, respectively. That 2024 50 free time still stands as the state record.
Her best time in the 50 free came at the Arizona Senior State Championships in March of 2024 in 22.60. Her 100 free best came a year earlier at the Western Zone Senior Championships in 50.17. In addition to her sprint free skill set, she also holds a 200 free best of 1:51.39 from November 2024.
Barbee is the current Arizona Swimming LSC record holder in the 50 free in both the 11-12 and 13-14 age groups, with times of 23.82 and 22.74, respectively. When Barbee was 13, she clocked a massive 21.59 on the anchor leg of the 200 medley relay in 21.59 at the 2023 JSC Fall Invite.

Based on Barbee’s best times, she would have qualified just two spots outside of the ‘A’ final in the 50 free, 14th in the 100 free, and 30th in the 200 free.
Barbee is oozing with sprint potential, but has notably not swum a best time in her key events since 2024. Since swimming her 22.60 in the 50 free, she has only dipped under 23 seconds four times.
The Arizona State women’s sprinters are quickly catching up to the firepower of the men’s program. The Sun Devil women currently boast six 50 freestylers who have clocked times under 23 seconds in the 50 free this season, with Big 12 and NCAA Championships still to come. The 100 free tells a similar story, with 9 swimmers having swum a 100 free under 50 seconds.
Albane Cachot, who boasts the fastest 50 and 100 free times this season, is just a freshman, meaning she will have two overlapping seasons with Barbee. Julia Ullmann, who was 3rd in the 50 free at Big 12s last season, will be a senior when Barbee makes her debut in Tempe. If Barbee is able to get down to the 22.2 range, she is an immediate contender atop the Big 12, and her relay upside also provides the Sun Devils some extra firepower.
Barbee joins Ava Eddy and Hannah Carpenter in the 2027 recruiting class for the Sun Devils.
