The Chicago Bears offensive coordinator has reportedly pulled out from consideration for a position with the Philadelphia Eagles. Doyle generated interest from the Eagles last week as Philly looks to fill the offensive coordinator vacancy it created when its postseason run ended. So instead of spreading his wings and leaving the nest, Declan Doyle is running it back for another year as the Bears’ offensive coordinator:

Quarterback Caleb Williams finished in the top-10 in throwing yards and touchdowns. Chicago’s ground game racked up the third-most yards and ninth-most rushing touchdowns. Seven different Bears pass catchers hauled in 30+ receptions, while four different guys picked up 650+ receiving yards. Sure, Ben Johnson called the plays and designed the offense. But assistant coaches have their roles in building this thing out. So by running it back with the Bears, Declan Doyle gets to keep his name attached to this group. It’s a nice thing to have on your résumé.

If things go well for Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson, quarterback Caleb Williams, and the rest of Chicago’s offense, there will come a day when Declan Doyle will get an opportunity to call plays for another team down the line. But for now, Doyle remains in Chicago. And that is a wonderful bit of news. Continuing to work with Johnson and Williams figures to give him a path to raise his coaching profile, which already had its arrow pointing up because of his previous experience with Sean Payton while with the New Orleans Saints and Denver Broncos.
Payton spoke glowingly about Declan Doyle last offseason, laying out what the Bears were getting in their offensive coordinator. And for what it’s worth, I can understand why. During the offseason, I enjoyed listening to Doyle discuss his role in building the offense. I also found it interesting how he put the slow start for Chicago’s offense during training camp in perspective. Chicago’s slow st his perspective. Given his trajectory, I look forwarad to hearing from him more as a Year 2 coordinator.
There is no denying Declan Doyle’s coaching stock is on the rise. Hopefully, the arrow continues to point up and the offense takes a step forward in Year 2 with him as the offensive coordinator. If it does, then we will likely hear Doyle’s name come up in coaching searches at this time next year.
