Drake Maye is the new king of New England and Tar Heelia.
At 6-4 and the runt of the Maye family, Drake has taken his 23-year-old story to another level. His dad Mark, also a former Tar Heel quarterback, and star mom athlete Aimee, had four boys and the youngest took every tease and challenge from his bigger bros and always came back to play again.
Not only ultra-competitive in all the recreational sports his family competed in, Drake credits growing up with Luke, Cole and Beau for including him in every activity as he blossomed into a star and this fall a hero in America’s most popular sport.
Also a high school basketball whiz, Drake stopped growing at just the right size to become a football phenom, first at two Charlotte high schools and then All-ACC at Carolina. The third pick in the 2024 NFL draft, Maye has led the Patriots to their 12th Super Bowl but first since the 2018 season and Tom Brady’s last and ninth with the Pats.
As a starter in his second season, Maye lost two of the first three games before the Pats reeled off ten straight wins to clinch their first playoff spot since 2019 and he became a finalist as the NFL’s MVP that will be announced Super Bowl week.
New England’s 10-7 win over the Denver Broncos that began under sunny skies and ended in a mile high blizzard was hardly a work of art, but definitely one of gumption that was Maye’s biggest challenge as a pro quarterback.
He ran up the middle for the Patriots’ only touchdown and then set up the winning field goal on a field that was basically unplayable for most of the second half. The Broncos played without injured starting quarterback Bo Nix, and who knows what might have happened had Nix played.
Maye’s entire life has been charmed, with the last year a storybook of his maturation that began with a prep basketball and football career in Charlotte while watching Luke sink UNC’s Elite Eight buzzer beater in Memphis and Cole pitch for Florida in the College World Series. Ten years ago, at 13, Drake and his dad went to Santa Clara to cheer for the Panthers against Peyton Manning’s Broncos.
Now, he will be back in the same stadium for Super Bowl LX against Seattle whose quarterback Sam Darnold has become a star in his own right. Darnold and Maye will prepare diligently for their first Super Bowl starts.
Whether he and his team beat the Seahawks on February 8, the franchise that Brady and coach Bill Belichick became known as the evil empire may change with the affable and cooperative Maye.
Helping Drake is his new bride, Ann Michael Maye, his middle school sweetheart who now has a popular social media presence on baking desserts. Winning a Super Bowl in his first try will be a cherry on top.
