Fans of the Great British Bake Off will be seeing a familiar face when the show returns for its next season. On Monday, Jan. 26, the show's official Instagram account confirmed that Nigella Lawson will be joining the program as a judge, taking over the role from Prue Leith who announced her exit days prior."We’re delighted to announce that Nigella Lawson is joining The Great British Bake Off as our new judge," the Instagram caption read."I’m uncharacteristically rather lost for words right now," Lawson was quotes as saying. "Of course it’s daunting to be following in the footsteps of Prue Leith and Mary Berry before her, great dames both, but I’m also bubbling with excitement. The Great British Bake Off is more than a television programme, it’s a National Treasure – and it’s a huge honour to be entrusted with it. I’m just thrilled to be joining the team and all the new bakers to come, I wish the marvellous Prue all the best, and am giddily grateful for the opportunity."
View this post on InstagramYou may recognize Lawson as she has hosted a variety of television shows. She's a British food writer, TV cook, and journalist who rose to fame in the late '90s with her bestselling cookbook "How to Eat," followed by "How to Be a Domestic Goddess," which turned her into a household name. She has also starred on shows like Nigella Bites, Nigella Feasts, and Simply Nigella.
Fans seem really excited to see what Lawson brings to the tent.
"I can’t wait for all of the exquisitely creative adjectives that Nigella will use to describe people’s bakes," one comment on the Instagram announcement read.
"This is brilliant news!! She’ll give Paul a run for his money!! @nigellalawson bring on the innuendo!!" someone else said.
Co-host Alison Hammond has also responded to the announcement, welcoming Lawson with open arms.
"Welcome to the family Queen," Hammond wrote.
Meanwhile, it was an emotional goodbye for Leith, who has been on the show for nine seasons. Leith joined the program in 2016 after Mary Berry announced her exit. Now, Leith is moving on."After nine series and judging more than 400 challenges, I have decided to step down as a judge on The Great British Bake Off," Leith captioned an Instagram post on January 21. "Bake Off has been a fabulous part of my life for the last nine years, I have genuinely loved it and I’m sure I’ll miss working with my fellow judge Paul, Alison and Noel and the teams at Love Productions and Channel 4. But now feels like the right time to step back (I’m 86 for goodness sake!), there’s so much I’d like to do, not least spend summers enjoying my garden. Whoever joins the team, I’m sure they’ll love it as much as I have. I feel very lucky to have been part of it."
Fans of the show were absolutely heartbroken to hear the news of Leith's departure.
