Bob Iger Just Walked the Site of Disney’s Next Theme Park

Plans for Disney’s next global theme park took a small but symbolic step forward on Sunday, when Bob Iger, the CEO of The Walt Disney Company, shared photos of himself touring the future site of the company’s long-anticipated Abu Dhabi theme park and resort.

In images posted to social media, Iger is seen walking along a stretch of desert coastline, offering a rare, early glimpse of the land where Disney’s seventh theme park resort is expected to rise. Referring to the project as “Disneyland Abu Dhabi,” Iger wrote that he was “walking the site of what will one day be Disneyland Abu Dhabi,” adding, “Lots of work ahead, but all very exciting!”

Iger’s visit underscored the significance of the development, which was first announced last year and marked Disney’s return to building a brand-new destination from the ground up.

Disney first revealed plans for the Abu Dhabi resort in 2025, describing the project as a major step in extending the company’s global reach. The waterfront park will be built on Yas Island, a fast-growing leisure hub that already hosts several large-scale theme parks and entertainment venues.

At the time of the announcement, Iger described Abu Dhabi as “a place where heritage meets innovation,” saying the new resort would blend Disney storytelling with the region’s architecture, culture and setting. “Disneyland Abu Dhabi will be authentically Disney and distinctly Emirati,” Iger said, calling it “an oasis of extraordinary Disney entertainment at this crossroads of the world.”

Yas Island has emerged as one of the Middle East’s largest entertainment destinations, home to attractions such as Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi. Disney’s project is being developed in partnership with Miral, the company behind Yas Island’s rapid transformation into a global tourism hub.

Under the agreement, Miral will fully develop, build and operate the resort, while Disney Imagineers will lead creative design and provide operational oversight—a structure similar to the arrangement used for Tokyo Disney Resort.

Miral chairman Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak framed the partnership as part of a broader vision for Abu Dhabi’s future as a cultural and entertainment destination. “What we are creating with Disney in Abu Dhabi is a whole new world of imagination,” he said, adding that the collaboration is intended to inspire families across the region and beyond.

For Disney, the Abu Dhabi project represents both a geographic expansion and a creative one. Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney Experiences, has described the resort as the company’s “most advanced and interactive destination,” noting that its waterfront location will allow Disney to tell its stories “in completely new ways.” He has also pointed to the site’s global accessibility, with the United Arab Emirates located within a four-hour flight of roughly one-third of the world’s population.

While no construction or opening timeline has been announced, Miral officials have previously said the goal is to move forward as quickly as possible without compromising quality. Iger’s site visit suggests that early planning and groundwork are actively underway, even if visible construction has yet to begin.

For now, Disney’s next theme park exists largely as an idea—one that, with Iger’s walk along the shoreline, is beginning to feel a little more tangible.
