Bills complete seventh interview for head coach opening

After firing Sean McDermott, the Bills have cast a wide net to fill their head coach openings, completing their seventh interview for the position on Sunday.

Below are the candidates who’ve already interviewed for the opening and their resume.

    Joe Brady

    2025 position: Bills offensive coordinator

    Head coach experience: None

Stat: Boasted the fourth-best offense (376.3 yards per game, 28.3 points per game) in 2025 and second-best (30.9 points per game) in 2024.

Previous stints: Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator, 2020-2021 (FIRED) | LSU passing game coordinator, 2019 (College Football National Champion)

Ties to Bills: 2023-2025 offensive coordinator

Blurb: Brady’s stint as the Bills’ offensive playcaller was mostly a successful one, evidenced by top-five finishes in points per game in 2024 and 2025, but Josh Allen’s passing outputs dipped during his three-year stint. From 2020-2022, Allen passed for over 4,000 yards and tossed at least 35 touchdowns (Brady took over in week 11 of 2023). In 2024 and 2025, under Brady’s watch, Allen didn’t eclipse 4,000 yards and topped out at 28 passing touchdowns. Admittedly, Allen limited his turnovers, throwing just six and 10 interceptions, respectively, in the two-year stretch. Along with protecting the ball, the Bills’ run game dominated under Brady, leading the league in rushing yards in 2025.

    Brian Daboll

    2025 position: Giants head coach

Head coach experience: New York Giants, 2022-2025 (20-40-1 record, 1-1 in playoffs)

Stat: Led Bills to top two-three finishes in points per game in 2020 (28.4) and 2021 (28.4). Fired from Giants after finishing 15th, 30th, 31st, and 17th in points per game from 2022-2025.

Previous stints: Giants head coach, 2022-2025 (FIRED) | Bills offensive coordinator | Alabama offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach (CFB National Champion) | Won five Super Bowls with New England Patriots as assistant

Ties to Bills: 2018-2021 offensive coordinator | Went to St. Francis High School, URochester for college

Blurb: Under Daboll’s watch, Josh Allen turned from one of the league’s most raw prospects ever to one of the game’s top quarterbacks. In his rookie year, Allen threw 10 touchdowns compared to 12 interceptions. By his last season with Daboll in 2021, Allen threw 36 scores and 15 picks. After his tenure in Buffalo, Daboll took over the Giants head coach and succeeded almost immediately, leading New York to a 9-7-1 record and a playoff win. After that, however, Daboll went just 11-33 in two-and-a-half seasons before getting fired this past November.

    Anthony Lynn

2025 position: Commanders running backs coach

Head coach experience: Bills interim, 2017 | Chargers, 2017-2020 (33-32 record, 1-1 in playoffs)

Stat: Led Chargers to 12-4 record in 2018

Previous stints: Lions offensive coordinator, 2021 | 49ers assistant head coach, 2022-2023

Ties to Bills: 2015-2016 offensive coordinator | Interim head coach for one game in 2016

Blurb: Lynn went 0-1 as the Bills’ interim head coach in 2016 before Buffalo picked Sean McDermott over him in their ensuing coaching search. Lynn landed in Los Angeles as the Chargers coach, where he boasted a 33-32 record in four seasons. Lynn went 9-7 in 2017 and 12-4 in 2018, but after back-to-back losing seasons in 2019 and 2020, Lynn was fired.

    Grant Udinski

    2025 position: Jaguars offensive coordinator

    Head coach experience: None

Stat: Led Jaguars to sixth-best offense in NFL in 2025 (27.9 points per game) in first year as coordinator

Previous stints: Vikings offensive assistant, 2022-2024 | Panthers assistant, 2020-2021

    Ties to Buffalo: None

Blurb: Udinski turned 30 years old earlier this month. He has exactly one season of experience as a coordinator, but has been around both Sam Darnold and Trevor Lawrence for their career years in 2024, Darnold with the Vikings, and 2025, Lawrence with the Jaguars.

    Lou Anarumo

    2025 position: Colts defensive coordinator

    Head coach experience: None

Stat: Led Bengals defense for six seasons.

Previous stints: Bengals defensive coordinator, 2019-2024 | Miami Dolphins defensive assistant, 2012-2017 | Giants defensive assistant, 2018

Ties to Buffalo: Syracuse graduate assistant, 1990-1991

Blurb: Anarumo’s defense held opponents to 20.75 points per game during Cincinnati’s run to the Super Bowl in 2021. One year later, in the 2022 postseason, the Bengals held opposing offenses to 20 points per game. Since then, however, Anarumo’s defenses have struggled, ranking 31st, 25th, and 23rd in points per game from 2023-2025.

    Anthony Weaver

    2025 position: Dolphins defensive coordinator

    Head coach experience: None

Stat: Led Dolphins to fourth-best defense in 2024 (314.3 yards per game)

Previous stints: Ravens assistant, 2021-2023 | Texans defensive coordinator, 2020 | Bills defensive assistant, 2013

Ties to Buffalo: Bills defensive line coach in 2014 | Saratoga Springs native

Blurb: Weaver has been coaching in the NFL in some capacity since 2012 andr was the Bills defensive line coach in 2013 when the team was second in the NFL with 57 sacks. Mario Williams, Kyle Williams, and Jerry Hughes all amassed at least 10 sacks.

    Phillip Rivers

    2025 position: Colts quarterback

Head coach experience: St. Michael Catholic High School, 2021-2024

Stat: 18 seasons as NFL quarterback

    Previous stints: None

Ties to Buffalo: Played final playoff game against Bills in 2020 wildcard round.

Blurb: Realistically, Rivers makes the most sense as some type of offensive assistant. He has no NFL coaching experience whatsoever, but showed plenty of poise, returning to the gridiron after four seasons off. Rivers has 18 years of experience under center and is considered one of the more cerebral signal callers in the game, but it would be ridiculous to hand the reins to somebody whose coaching experience tops out at the high school level.
