ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The News10NBC red alert continues tonight into Monday as an area wide heavy snowfall blankets all of Western New York. At times, the snow has been accumulating at the rate of one and half inches per hour with visibility falling to near a quarter mile. As a result, travel has been treacherous with driving not recommended for the remainder of the overnight. The News10NBC First Alert meteorologists anticipate that snowfall will not taper off until around midnight as it changes from a steady snow to a more intermittent lake effect snow.
New accumulations of snow heading into this Sunday evening and Monday will measure to at least another five to ten inches. That would push the total snowfall into the range of 12 to 19 inches by Monday afternoon. The bitter cold is also a significant issue as the temperature has been hovering just below 10 degrees for most of the day with the wind chill at minus 5 to minus 10 degrees.
Monday will produce an “off and on” snowfall due to Laken Ontario snow showers. However, any new snowfall should be limited to communities along Route 104, especially into Wayne County. Another few inches of accumulation is likely for the some of the eastern portions of our viewing area. The wind will begin to increase later Monday with gusts expected to be near 30 to 35 miles per hour by the evening. Since this snow has been dry and fluffy, blowing and drifting may produce poor visibility in the open areas.
The longer term forecast shows that there will be little, if any, relief from the Arctic weather as the bitter cold will likely continue through the end of January.
