Comedian Yakov Smirnoff didn't expect to spend his 75th birthday changing diapers, but then again, who does?
The comedy icon, who started his lengthy career in the Soviet Union, announced last summer that he and his wife would be welcoming a new baby soon. When Smirnoff celebrated his 75th birthday on Saturday, the comedian did so as the father of a baby son.
In a cute video posted to his Instagram page, Smirnoff cradled his cuddly son, Leonardo, who wore a white onesie and held a toy.

Back in July, Smirnoff and his wife, Olivia Kosarieva, shared that they were expecting their first child together.
“At my age, most people are planning for retirement. Me? I’m buying diapers. Not for me — but for our future child. Yes, my wife and I are having a baby!” Smirnoff told PEOPLE. “People keep asking me, ‘Yakov, how did this happen?’ And I say, ‘Same way it always happens… just with more stretching and heating pads afterward.'”
Smirnoff was Shocked at the News
With two grown children of his own already, Smirnoff and his wife were “shocked, but in a good way” when they found out they were expecting.
“I have two grown children already, but they haven’t had kids yet. So we figured, we’d just go ahead and make our own grandchild,” he laughed. “We’ll skip a generation!”
Both Smirnoff and his wife cried upon hearing the baby’s heartbeat for the first time. Naturally, Smirnoff found the opportunity to make jokes about the situation.
“She was crying because she realized she has to give birth. I was crying because this kid is going to college one day, and with my genes, there’s no chance of an athletic or academic scholarship — unless making people laugh counts as extra credit,” he noted.
Smirnoff said he planned to savor the parenting journey this time around and sees “something magical” in tackling parenthood again.
“In the end, becoming a dad again wasn’t just part of the plan. It turned out better than the plan,” he added. “And only in America… can you have a baby, be eligible for Medicare, and get a senior discount on diapers all at the same time. What a country!”
