Why Is This Beloved Scrubs Character Missing From the Reboot? Zach Braff Explains

It appears that the Janitor is still mad at J.D. for sticking that penny in the door.

Scrubs fans are thrilled for the show's upcoming revival, which marks its 10th season and reunites many of the medical sitcom's most beloved characters—including J.D. (Zach Braff) and Turk (Donald Faison). But when the first Scrubs trailer dropped, an outcry on social media erupted almost immediately. Why? Because Neil Flynn's vengeful and hilarious Janitor was noticeably missing.

Why isn't Neil Flynn in the 'Scrubs' reboot?

Neil Flynn is not part of the Scrubs reboot's initial cast—though he might be reintroduced sometime soon.

According to Zach Braff—who leads the cast as J.D. and is executive producing the show— Neil Flynn is "interested" in returning at some point, and the team is hoping to bring him back later in Season 1, or for Season 2.

"Well, the true answer is if we’re blessed to have a second season, absolutely," Braff told Esquire recently, when asked if Neil Flynn and Ken Jenkins (who played Dr. Kelso) will return to the Scrubs universe. "And the real answer for Season 1 is we’re not fully sure yet. Episodes 8 and 9 of the nine-episode order are still being written."

Depending on how the story winds up unfolding, The Janitor could make an appearance by the end of Season 1.

"[Flynn and Jenkins] are interested in doing it," Braff continued. "But do we have the bandwidth in the first nine to get to it all and service a story that would be worthy of Ken and Neil? That might come true. At this point, I can’t tell you the answer, but most definitely, if we are lucky enough to get a Season 2, that’s something we want to do."

Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence also wants to bring back Flynn—or at least acknowledge The Janitor's absence from Sacred Heart. "My hope would be that we establish where everybody from [the original show] is, whether they're still with us at the hospital or not," Lawrence told TVLine.

With that being said, the IMDb page for Scrubs Season 10, Episode 1 does list Neil Flynn as The Janitor in the cast. While this is likely an automated carry-over from the original series page rather than official confirmation, loyal fans have their fingers crossed.

It's also worth noting that Flynn is already busy in the Bill Lawrence universe: He has a recurring role as Raymond on the Apple TV+ hit Shrinking (also created by Lawrence). While Season 3 of Shrinking premieres on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, Flynn's return hasn't officially been confirmed yet—meaning his absence from the Sacred Heart set could come down to difficulties in syncing production schedules.

The Scrubs revival's official logline is as follows, per TV Guide: "J.D. & Turk scrub in together for the first time in a long time—medicine has changed, interns have changed, but their bromance has stood the test of time. Characters new and old navigate the waters of Sacred Heart with laughter, heart and some surprises along the way."

Braff dished on some more details in his interview with Esquire(Spoiler warning!): In the revival, much of the original gang is still working at Sacred Heart—including Turk, Carla, Dr. Cox, Elliot and The Todd—but J.D. is working an hour away as a concierge doctor. When a patient of his checks into Sacred Heart, J.D. is forced to return and reconnect with his old coworkers.

But while Elliot and J.D. were married when we last saw them in Season 9, it seems like their love might be in the past: Both characters are notably without wedding rings in trailers for Season 10 (though they appear to be getting along). J.D. and Turk's friendship has also been struggling due to distance and busy lives, and the revival will see "Vanilla Bear" and "Chocolate Bear" joyfully reuniting and getting back to their old antics.
