Video appears to show agent disarm Alex Pretti moments before he was killed

Video appears to show a federal agent disarm Alex Pretti moments before he was shot and killed by U.S. Border Patrol officer Saturday morning in Minneapolis.

Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a 37-year-old Illinois-born intensive care unit nurse at the Veterans Administration, was shot and killed Saturday morning by a U.S. Border Patrol officer during an immigration operation in Minneapolis, officials said.

Numerous videos taken by witnesses at the scene captured the minutes leading up to the deadly shooting, including a struggle between Pretti and several federal officers.

The events captured on video contradict what the Department of Homeland Security and other government agencies claim happened.

In the videos, Pretti can be seen taking videos and assisting a woman in the street when masked Border Patrol agents swam around him. He was first pepper sprayed and then tackled to the ground. Seconds later, a CPB agent shot and killed him.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, Pretti “approached” the agents and then “officers attempted to disarm the suspect but the armed suspect violently resisted.”

However, video appears to show an agent disarming him moments before he is shot.

Plus, at no point can Pretti be seen on video brandishing a gun. Between 8 to 10 gunshots can be heard.

“The sickening lies told about our son by the administration are reprehensible and disgusting. Alex is clearly not holding a gun when attacked by Trump’s murdering and cowardly ICE thugs,” Pretti’s parents, Michael and Susan Pretti, said in a statement. “He has his phone in his right hand and his empty left hand is raised above his head while trying to protect the woman ICE just pushed down all while being pepper sprayed.”

Use-of-force experts told NBC Chicago that deadly force by agents would require a real threat, like somebody holding or brandishing a gun — not just carrying one, as is legal in Minnesota.

DHS claims the shots were defensive and that the agent was “fearing for his life and the lives and safety of fellow officers.”‘

Pretti owned a handgun and had a concealed-carry permit in Minnesota, Minneapolis police said. His family told The Associated Press they did not know him to ever carry the gun.

Pretti had no criminal record, court records show. Apart from a few traffic tickets, he had never had any interactions with law enforcement, his family said.

Pretti’s parents described him as a “kindhearted soul who cared deeply for his family and friend” who “wanted to make a difference in this world.”

Pretti attended high school in the Green Bay area of Wisconsin. A photo of Pretti from his high school yearbook was shared with NBC News by Green Bay Area Public School District Director of Communications Lori Blakeslee.

Governor Pritzker addressed the shooting in a post on social media, saying in part “We must put a stop to Trump’s ICE. Now.”

It’s unclear whether Minnesota authorities will launch an investigation.

Two federal law enforcement sources told NBC News that DHS is taking the lead on the investigation — a change from the standard procedure. Normally, the FBI would take the lead in a DHS officer-involved shooting and there would be a parallel internal DHS investigation, according to NBC News.

Former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who recently launched the “ICE Accountability Project,” said the feds have not been trustworthy.

“Every single time there’s a major incident, it’s blame the victim, exonerate the agent. Blame the victim, exonerate the agent. You can’t believe what they’re saying,” Lightfoot said.
