Chicagoans protest against deadly Minneapolis ICE operations in sub-zero cold

A group of protesters gathered in sub-zero wind chills in Chicago for an “emergency action” Saturday afternoon after a man was shot and killed by federal officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota earlier that morning.

Protestors gathered at 3 p.m. near the Little Village Arch, located at 3121 West 26th Street.

Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a 37-year-old Illinois-born ICU nurse at the Veterans Administration, was shot Saturday morning by a U.S. Border Patrol officer after he “approached” them with a 9 mm semiautomatic handgun, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

DHS officials did not specify if he brandished the gun, and it is not visible in video of the shooting taken by a witness and later obtained by The Associated Press.

Pretti was upset by President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown in Minneapolis, his family told The Associated Press. He recently participated in protests following the killing of Renee Good by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Law Enforcement officer earlier this month.

A flyer advertising the protest said the “emergency action” to “stop ICE terror” was “in response to another shooting by CBP [U.S. Customs and Border Protection].”

Video captured by Telemundo Chicago photographers at the scene showed a group of roughly 50 people at the protest. People on the sidewalk handed out cups full of warm drinks to the protestors who were marching in sub-zero windchills.

The high Saturday was around 7 degrees, according to the National Weather Service, with wind chills as low as 6 degrees below zero.
