The man killed by a federal officer in Minneapolis on Saturday was an Illinois-born intensive care nurse with no criminal record, his family members said.
Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse at the Veterans Administration, was upset by President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown in Minneapolis, his family told The Associated Press. He recently participated in protests following the killing of Renee Good by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Law Enforcement officer earlier this month.
His parents, who live in Wisconsin, recently told him to be careful while protesting.
“We had this discussion with him two weeks ago or so, you know, that go ahead and protest, but do not engage, do not do anything stupid, basically,” Michael Pretti said. “And he said he knows that. He knew that.”
Like Good, court records show he had no criminal record.
Apart from a few traffic tickets, Pretti had never had any interactions with law enforcement, his family said.
According to The Department of Homeland Security, Pretti was shot by a U.S. Border Patrol officer after he “approached” them with a 9 mm semiautomatic handgun. DHS officials did not specify if he brandished the gun, and it is not visible in video of the shooting taken by a witness and later obtained by The Associated Press.
Pretti owned a handgun and had a concealed-carry permit in Minnesota, his family said, though they did not know him to ever carry it.
