The Mega Millions jackpot is on the move again after no tickets matched all six numbers in the latest drawing, pushing the estimated jackpot for Tuesday’s drawing to $285 million.
In Southern California, one ticket came close. A ticket matching five numbers but missing the Mega number was sold at a gas station–convenience store in Perris and is worth $1,265,778, according to the California Lottery.
In most states, tickets that match five numbers but miss the Mega number carry a flat $1 million prize. California plays by different rules. Under state law, major lottery prizes are paid on a pari-mutuel basis, meaning payouts are based on ticket sales and the number of winning tickets.
The Perris ticket had a base prize of $421,926, which was tripled to $1,265,778 after a 3x multiplier was applied, the California Lottery reported. In other states, that same ticket would have been worth $3 million, according to the Mega Millions Consortium, which conducts the game.
Another ticket matching five numbers but missing the Mega number was sold in New York and is worth $2 million after its 2x multiplier was applied, the consortium announced.
The numbers drawn Friday were 30, 42, 49, 53, 66, with the Mega number 4. The estimated jackpot for that drawing was $266 million.
Friday’s drawing marked the 15th since the last time a ticket matched all six numbers.
The odds of matching all five numbers plus the Mega number remain long — 1 in 290,472,336, according to the Mega Millions Consortium. The overall odds of winning any prize are 1 in 23.
Mega Millions is played in 45 states, as well as the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
