The next Pittsburgh Steelers head coach is someone with whom Chicago Bears fans have some familiarity.
Mike McCarthy, who coached the Green Bay Packers from 2006-18 and was a candidate for the Bears’ head-coach vacancy last offseason, is expected to be named the next Steelers head coach. McCarthy follows Mike Tomlin, who stepped down after the team’s playoff loss condcluded his 19th season in Pittsburgh.
Even though this doesn’t directly impact the Bears, the news of Mike McCarthy’s hire in PIttsburgh fills the void of what was the last head coach vacancy that Minnesota Vikings Defensive Coordinator Brian Flores had interviewed for in January. So, once again, Flores will be locking horns with Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson and quarterback Caleb Williams in 2026. It is what it is. I look forward to seeing what adjustments Chicago makes when facing Minnesota next season.
Even without the Brian Flores implications, hiring Mike McCarthy is still a fascinating decision. McCarthy, 62, joins a Pittsburgh franchise that has missed the postseason just three times since 2014. So it’s not as if McCarthy is walking into a place with no expectations. Plus, McCarthy’s hire will certainly lead to folks making the connection regarding a possible return to the Steelers for quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Even if Rodgers doesn’t return, McCarthy’s history and reputation as a quarterback guru will likely put him in a spot to where he could have to draft and develop a young signal caller.
