Rochelle McLean has had, in her own words, "one hell of a week." On Jan. 23, the estranged wife of Backstreet Boys member AJ McLean posted a selfie to Instagram from her hospital bed. While she gave a thumbs-up to signal that she was all right, the caption brought her harrowing ordeal to light.
"I came to the ER Tuesday morning with an extremely bloated belly and pain on my right side of my abdomen," she wrote. "Thinking it was my appendix, I came to the emergency room to be sure. I ended up showing cecal volvulus in my ct scan. A twisted pinched colon. I basically went straight into surgery after that to have the compromised part of my colon removed and the healthy sections sewn back together again."
According to the National Institutes of Health, cecal volvulus is extremely rare in the U.S., accounting for around 4% of large bowel obstructions. The mortality rate is more than 30% if treatment is delayed more than 24 to 72 hours after it's diagnosed. Rochelle's quick-thinking might have saved her life.
Rochelle admitted that she'd "never even heard of" cecal volvulus, and reminded everyone to "listen to your body when something doesn't feel right." She finished her post by thanking all the doctors, nurses, and surgeons who had been caring for her.
More than a thousand people filled her comments with well-wishes, including NSYNC's Lance Bass and, of course, AJ.
"Me and the girls have been worried but praying for you to come home and so happy it’s finally here," he wrote. "I love you and I’m glad you went with your gut heehee to go to the hospital! ❤️❤️"
It's been three years since the couple separated, and two since they posted a joint message saying they had decided to officially end their marriage. Despite this, they have yet to file for divorce, and AJ's comments in Nov. 2025 suggest there's still hope.
“We’re not fully back together, but we are, hands-down, the best we’ve ever been,” he told Us Weekly. “There is such a love between the two of us, and we’ve been through f-----g hell and back. I have put this woman through the damn wringer, and the fact that she’s still here, either she’s crazy or she loves me or a little bit of both.”
