ROCHESTER, N.Y. – We continue to track a significant snowstorm that will impact a massive swath of the nation over the next two days. It is currently in its early stages over the southern plains and Mississippi valley, dumping snow, sleet, freezing rain, and rain. We won’t have to worry about any ice, but we may see our first 1 ft+ snowstorm in nearly a decade.
Before that however, we are Yellow on the Threat Tracker for this morning due to bitterly cold temperatures. Wind chills got all the way down to -21 degrees in Rochester this morning, which is enough to cause frostbite to exposed skin in half an hour. Wind chills will rise to just below zero later today, at which point we’ll go back to Green on the Threat Tracker. Still cold with actual temperatures peaking around 10 degrees, and a little AM lake effect snow may leave a few tenths of an inch to an inch in spots along the lakeshore. That lake snow will push off back over the lake by this afternoon.
Red Alert begins tomorrow. The snowstorm will reach us tomorrow morning around 8-9am, but it starts light. Snowfall really picks up just after the lunch hour. It will stay heavy all the way through midnight, with snowfall rates reaching 1.5″/hr at times. Temperatures will be frigid; near 10 degrees; which will help to make the snow light and fluffy and easy to shovel. As the storm passes by overnight, the wind will become more northerly which will cause the lake to give us a boost in our snowfall. By Monday morning, area-wide could see 10-14″ of snow on the ground with the lakeshore counties seeing the higher end. Then, as the storm continues to exit, we will change over purely to lake effect snow. This will tack on another few inches of snow from Rochester east to Syracuse.
