Karen Carpenter Reportedly Disliked This 1975 Carpenters Hit So Much She Refused to Perform It

Karen Carpenter reportedly disliked the 1975 Carpenters song "Solitaire" so much she refused to perform it live.

According to the YouTube channel Professor of Rock, the brother and sister duo were both unsure about the tune, penned by songwriter Neil Sedaka. However, Richard Carpenter admired the song and wanted his sister to record it.

After Karen's version of the song, Richard believed it was one of her greatest performances ever. However, Karen didn't appear to feel the same way. She reportedly refused to perform it live.

In an interview with Huffington Post, Richard shared Karen's feelings about the song. He explained, "Karen never cared for 'Solitaire,' and I'm not that crazy about it either!"

He continued, "What I liked about it, more than anything, is that it shows off her voice so darned well. But, no, she never cared for that song."

Richard added that Karen was "born to be recorded" and that he focused their songs to "feature" her voice. The composer and songwriter added, "So many people have said to us, 'We can understand every word in your songs,' which, with all the pop and rock records at the time, was difficult to do.' When we were mixing, I remember saying, at least once, 'Just a little more lead.'"

"Solitaire" was released on January 18, 1975. It became the Carpenters' 12th top-selling hit on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart and 15th consecutive Top 20 hit on the Hot 100.

The song was originally recorded by Neil Sedaka for his 1972 album Solitaire/Neil Sedaka. The singer/songwriter subsequently opened for The Carpenters during their 1975 world tour.

Although neither Richard nor Karen Carpenter were fans of the song "Solitaire" there were other songs he did like. These included "Close To You," "Superstar," "For All We Know," "Reason To Believe," and "Crystal Lullaby" as well as "This Masquerade," "Merry Christmas, Darling," and the duo's cover of The Beatles' "Ticket To Ride."

Karen Carpenter died at 32 in 1983. Richard Carpenter continues to keep their band's legacy alive for new generations to enjoy.
