Local leaders assure public of readiness as winter storm approaches New York

GREECE, N.Y. — Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency for New York in anticipation of a storm expected on Sunday. Local leaders met Friday to prepare the public for the snow.

How Monroe County and City of Rochester are preparing

City and county officials emphasized safety during the storm. They assured residents that they are well-staffed, with municipalities like Rochester planning 24-hour crew operations and the use of contractors.

One of the things News10NBC wanted to know about was how the county is preparing to salt the roads. In Greece, there were at least seven trucks loaded with salt Friday.

The county relies on individual municipalities, like Rochester or Greece, to plow and salt the roads. We asked Rochester Mayor Malik Evans how prepared the city is ahead of the storm.

“In the city, we are not dealing with salt shortage at all, we keep it quiet, last year we actually lend some salt out. But right now we’re good, we’re still good,” Evans said. “This has been a very tough winter, but we’ve been able to preserve the salt that we have.”

    Code Blue

A Code Blue is in effect across the state. In Monroe County, anytime temperatures drop below freezing or winter weather poses a serious risk, RTS bus services offer free transportation to shelters.

RTS offers free transportation to the Open Door Mission on Plymouth Avenue (routes 15 and 21), House of Mercy on Ormond Street (route 3), and Saving Grace Ministries on Norton Street for men (routes 4 and 5). RTS OnDemand also offers transportation to two centers in Brockport, Oak Orchard on West Avenue and First Baptist Church on Main Street.

Officials advised residents to call 211 for questions or concerns, such as unplowed streets or needing a warm place to stay, instead of calling 911.
