‘Back to the Future’ Star Nearly Broke Down Rehearsing With Crispin Glover – Here’s Why

Actor and comedian Thomas F. "Tom" Wilson is opening up about his arguably most famous role, 1950s bully Biff Tannen, in 1985's Back to the Future.

During a January 20 episode of Michael Rosenbaum's podcast, Inside of You, Wilson discussed his audition for the Robert Zemeckis-directed film. Wilson shared that he auditioned alongside Crispin Glover, who played Marty McFly's (Michael J. Fox) nerdy father, George McFly, and the target of Biff's bullying. The 66-year-old actor revealed he had an emotional response acting out a bullying scene with Glover before heading to the audition room. He explained that he was often bullied as a child.

"I was a weak kid. I had asthma. I was pushed around by bullies my whole life. I didn't want to play a bully. I didn't like the character. I wasn't crazy about it," said the actor, who also shared he didn't genuinely believe he would be cast as Biff.

He said he and Glover practiced a scene that showed Biff's cruelty toward George.

"I turn to him, 'You got my homework ready, McFly?' And Crispin, you know, sort of turns into a human question mark. 'Well, Biff,'" recalled Wilson on the podcast episode. "I had to stop because I almost started to cry."

Wilson explained that he saw a younger version of himself in Glover's portrayal of George. The actor said that while Glover noticed he was upset, he tried his best to hide his emotions.

"It was like looking at myself in the sixth grade and I totally lost my train of thought. And he says, 'Is everything [okay]?' And I had to do, 'Yeah, it's fine. It's fine. Yeah, we'll try it again," said Wilson.

Wilson also said that he was instantly impressed with Glover's acting abilities.

"I just thought, 'I'm probably not going to get this. Maybe I get one of Biff's gang members if I get lucky. If they don't hire this guy, they are out of their minds because, man, this is brilliant,'" said Wilson during the podcast interview.

The actor also described Glover as "eccentric and absolutely brilliant," as well as "the lynch pin of the movie." He explained that he believed George's eventual courage toward Biff is the heart of the film, not its time travel aspects.
