Melissa Auf der Maur is hitting the road, but the bassist known for her time in the Smashing Pumpkins and Hole won’t be playing rock venues. Instead, she’ll be hitting bookstores, art galleries and other intimate spaces to promote her forthcoming book, Even the Good Girls Will Cry: A ‘90s Rock Memoir.
The book, published on March 17, which also happens to be Auf der Maur’s 54th birthday, is already receiving rave reviews.

“[Auf der Maur is] refreshingly pure of heart, especially when describing her disgust with ‘the corporate takeover’ of alt-rock and painting an empathetic portrait of the oft-maligned [Hole frontwoman Courtney] Love. It’s a rollicking look at a bygone era,” wrote Publishers Weekly
Auf der Maur’s book tour kicks off on March 17 at the Strand Bookstore in New York City with a conversation with New Yorker writer Naomi Fry.
As a cassette DJ and ticket girl, Auf der Maur caught such legends as Nirvana, Jane’s Addiction, Pavement and Sonic Youth while growing up in Montreal. Later, she found herself in the thick of that scene after her band Tinker was chosen for an opening slot for the Smashing Pumpkins. That led to Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan to recommend her to Courtney Love for her band Hole.
She joined the band for their 1994 Live Through This world tour, which came following the tragic deaths of Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain and Hole’s previous bassist Kristen Pfaff.
The bassist/writer announced her book tour in a post on Instagram with a graphic listing the dates, and a video of her speaking directly to her fans.
“People over the internet, I told you before, I don’t know how to be this but I’m trying this. I’m looking to find you. I wrote a book. I’ve got some things to say.”
Fans responded to the news of the book and supporting tour in the comments of Auf der Maur’s post.
“Woo hoo! Yay for Hudson Valley events! Thinking of looking up to you in the mid-90’s brings me a great deal of nostalgia and sweetness to my heart. Looking forward to this and best wishes on the road! ? You’ve got a friend at our HV flower farm anytime you need one ;),” wrote one fan.
“Watch 43 year old me become an 18 year old mega fan girl come April. My inner teen is gonna get so healed. YAAAS!” added another.
