ALBANY, N.Y. — Crews in New York State are gearing up to respond to emergencies and clear the roads this weekend during the massive storm that’s expected to stretch 2,000 miles across the U.S.
Gov. Kathy Hochul has declared a state of emergency for the storm that could dump a foot of snow across the Rochester region and even more in parts of the Finger Lakes. We’ve issued a Yellow Alert for Sunday and Monday.
Hochul spoke on Friday morning about how state agencies are preparing and working with local governments. She said the Department of Transportation will pre-treat roads ahead of the storm’s arrival and that the state has enough salt reserves. As News10NBC covered in December, rock salt prices have been going up locally amid an increased demand because of an early winter.
Hochul also said that the state’s human services agencies are working to protect vulnerable people, including those who are homeless. If you need a place to stay warm, we have a list of shelters across the region. In addition, RTS buses are offering free transportation to shelters as part of Monroe County’s Code Blue.
“We have to get people indoors and we’re working closely with Code Blue and with our county governments on that issue as well,” Hochul said.
The main concern with the storm will be snow, so there’s less of a risk of ice forming on power lines and toppling them. Nevertheless, crews will be on standby to respond to downed power lines, Hochul says.
“The lighter snow, that is good. We’re not expecting ice to accompany it, which means that we should be in a good place in respect to the power lines. We always worry about ice accumulating on the power lines because one inch of ice can equate to 700 pounds of weight on the power lines. And many areas cannot withstand that,” she said.
News10NBC will continue tracking the storm in addition to brutally cold temperatures for at least the next 10 days. See our latest forecast here.
