The new sphere would be smaller than the existing, 20,000-capacity venue in Las Vegas, which since opening in 2023 has showcased U2, the Eagles and the Backstreet Boys.
Designed by Populous, the original MSG Sphere is 112m-tall and 157m-wide.
The Maryland sphere would accommodate 6,000 and feature a 16K x 16K interior display plane, called the world’s highest-resolution LED screen by Sphere Entertainment, the company behind the venue. It will also contain haptic seating, “immersive” sound and haptic 4D environmental effects.
The project, financed publicly and privately, is expected to create 2,500 jobs during construction and 4,750 jobs when operational. Sphere Entertainment says that the project is dependent on “governmental incentives and approvals”.
James L. Dolan, Sphere Entertainment’s executive chair, said: “Our focus has always been on creating a global network of Spheres across forward-looking cities. Sphere is a new experiential medium.”

A sphere is planned in Abu Dhabi which would be the same size as the MSG Sphere, according to the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority.
In 2023, Hanam in South Korea announced plans for a 120m-high, 160m-wide sphere, which would be dedicated to hosting K-Pop.
Plans for a similar venue at the Olympic Park in Stratford, east London, have since been quashed.
