Paris Hilton Speaks Out About Lasting Impacts of Intimate Video Leak at 19: It Was Abuse

Paris Hiltonis speaking out on Capitol Hill once again—and getting candid about the lasting impacts of a traumatic event when she was just a teenager.

The entrepreneur and reality star, 44, joined Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortezand other politicians to advocate for the Disrupt Explicit Forged Images and Non-Consensual Edits Act, or DEFIANCE Act. The legislature would allow victims of explicit AI-generated deepfakes to take legal action against creators and distributors of the content.

During her visit to Washington D.C. on Thursday (Jan. 22), Hilton reflected on how she was affected by one of her intimate videos being leaked on the internet without her consent when she was just a teenager.

"When I was 19-years-old, a private, intimate video of me was shared with the world without my consent," Hilton began. "People called it a scandal. It wasn't. It was abuse. There were no laws at the time to protect me. There weren't even words for what had been done to me. The internet was still new, and so was the cruelty that came with it."

Hilton added that at the time, she was humiliated, turned into a "punchline," and her pain was sold "for clicks." People even told her to move on and that she should be grateful for the attention.

"These people didn't see me as a young woman who had been exploited. They didn't see the panic that I felt, the humiliation or the shame. No one asked me what I lost," Hilton said. "I lost control over my body, over my reputation. My sense of safety and self-worth was stolen from me."

Hilton, who has previously been open about the years of abuse she faced at a boarding school as a teen, added that since the video was leaked in 2004, she has "fought hard" to gain control over the footage. But now, with the widespread use of AI, Hilton admitted that it's easier than ever to create explicit content of anyone without their permission.

In fact, Hilton estimated that there are "over 100,000 explicit deepfake images" of her that have been "made by AI"—and there's currently nothing that can be done to protect her or other people going through the same thing.

"I believed that the worst was behind me, but it wasn't," Hilton shared. "What happened to me then is happening now to millions of women and girls in a new and more terrifying way. Before, someone had to betray your trust and steal something real. Now all it takes is a computer and a stranger’s imagination. Deepfake pornography has become an epidemic."

Hilton added that as the mother of a little girl, she wants to do everything she can to protect her and other women who could become victims of deepfake technology.

"What I've learned is that when your image is violated, it doesn't disappear. It lives inside you, but so does your power. Telling the truth has helped me heal, and I am so proud that today I stand here without shame," Hilton said.

She concluded, "I am Paris Hilton, a woman, a wife, a mom, a survivor, and what was done to me was wrong. And I will keep telling the truth to protect every woman, every girl, every survivor, now and for the future."
