While appearing on Wednesday’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Short explains the major blunder he committed, having accidentally cut into the official wedding cake before his co-star and her new husband were meant to do it themselves.
He explains being seated in the reception area with other guests like Paul Rudd and Steve Martin, when realizing there was a cake stationed near where they were sitting.
"All of us were together, and there was a cake — a wedding cake — by our section. But it was a small wedding cake. I just assumed that there was a wedding cake for each section in the back, so after a few hours — and they haven’t cut their wedding cake yet — Steve said he was gonna leave," he told Kimmel.

The actor admits to possibly having a few cocktails and telling his co-star he needed to have a piece of cake before leaving the party.
"So I said, 'Steve, you can’t leave yet without a piece of wedding cake!' I had a fork in my hand, and I cut the wedding cake [on] one side [and] cut it [on] the other. And then all the people in our group screamed, 'Marty!'" he explained.
The sudden burst of yelling even caused Martin to go red in the face before Short realized it was the wedding cake. It wasn't meant to be presented for another hour for Gomez and Blanco's grand moment. A photo of the cake revealed the words "Just Married" on top, and the obvious fork cuts made by Short.
In a frenzy over what happened, Short tried his best to fix the cake and even said, "So I turned to Paul Rudd and said, 'Do we just leave?'"
Instead of fleeing the scene of the crime, Short stayed as the wedding planner called over the chef to fix the cake. In the end, Short admits, "But it ended up being very — like a Hollywood wedding cake in that it was beautiful, but now it had a little work done."
The wedding continued, with Martin and Short agreeing to hide the evidence from Gomez for a little while. It ended up not working as Gomez later caught up with her co-stars and said, "Hey, Marty! I heard you tried to eat my cake!" as they were leaving.
Martin, Short, and Gomez are scheduled to reprise their leading roles for Only Murder in the Building Season 6.
