HERCULES — The California Highway Patrol shut down the westbound direction of Interstate 80 early Thursday after police flooded the area looking for a person.

They later said that they had closed all the lanes and were diverting traffic to the Willow Avenue exit in Hercules.
The nature of the incident was not known immediately. The CHP said they would have more information on that aspect of the incident later Thursday. They described it only as “major police activity.”
Helicopters were overhead and circling the area and motorists coming from Vallejo were urged to use I- 680 or I-780 rather than the Carquinez Bridge.
The CHP did not have an estimate for how long the freeway would be closed.
