Ben Johnson is an NFL Coach of the Year Finalist

Just because the Chicago Bears are done playing football doesn’t mean we still can’t have some good news around here. And when it comes to Bears-related good news, it should come as no surprise that it begins with Ben Johnson. The first-year head coach is a finalist for the NFL Coach of the Year award that is given out by Associated Press voters.

No matter how the voting goes, I do enjoy seeing the head coach of Chicago’s football team get some much-deserved love:

NFL Coach of the Year Finalist: Ben Johnson

Ben Johnson accepted the Bears head coaching position on Jan. 20, 2025 and had his introductory press conference one day later. Since then, this franchise has been different. Johnson has helped raise the standard in Chicago with a business-like approach, a fine attention to detail, and accountability — not just as a buzzword, but instead as a core pillar of what happens at Halas Hall. It has been a refreshing change of tone and attitude when compared to other coaches we’ve had to cover since this site’s inception in 2017.

BEN JOHNSON ISN’T INTERESTED IN MORAL VICTORIES

The immediate result of Johnson’s arrival was an 11-win regular season, the team’s first playoff berth since 2020, its first NFC North title since 2018, and the franchise’s first postseason victory in 15 years before. Unlike previous successful seasons, this year’s Bears team was fueled by an offense direct by Johnson that ranked in the top-10 in points (9th), total yards (6th), touchdown passes (10th), rushing yards (3rd), and rushing scores (9th). No matter how the voting shakes out, Ben Johnson is a worthy candidate to win the NFL’s Coach of the Year honors.

For what it’s worth, the recent history of NFL Coach of the Year Winners is quirky. Take it for whatever it’s worth, but six of the last seven winners of the award are no longer coaching the team they won the award with. That includes Matt Nagy, who won the award as a first-year head coach of the Bears back in 2018. Johnson’s 2025 Bears are different than the 2018 team Nagy rode to glory. But that feels like a different post for another day. In the meantime, our kudos to Ben Johnson. Here’s hoping the best is yet to come.
