I have become far too obsessed with checking the updated projections for this massive storm. These are not the projections I want to obsess over. I want to obsess over ZiPS!
The Brewers finally did it, sending Freddy Peralta to the Mets, together with swing man Tobias Myers, for prospects Jett Williams and Brandon Sproat. As much as I want to believe the Brewers will be stung in 2026 by losing their best starting pitcher, we’ve seen this play before. And, after magically weathering the Peralta loss just fine, the Brewers will be all the better for having Jett Williams and Brandon Sproat going forward. They’ll figure out a way to turn one year of Freddy Peralta into 12 years of something close to Freddy Peralta. It’s a model. It’s annoying. It works. It was already going to be the case that, on paper, the Cubs would project to win more games in 2026 than the Brewers – that is often the case – and that difference will only get larger after this trade (Peralta was projected for 3 to 4 WAR, so the Brewers’ win total projections will probably drop one or two wins). Like I said, though, we’ve been burned so many times in recent years thinking that the Brewers would FINALLY take a step back after one of these trades, and I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect they will be fine once again. The Cubs have done their part this offseason to put together another 90+ win team of their own. That’s really the only part they can focus on, and then you just hope the Cubs have better results directly against the Brewers this time around. One measure by which we could evaluate the trade is how much the return does or does not stack up with the Corbin Burnes trade (pitcher with an even better track record, but twice the salary). Keith Law sees it as a similar return, with maybe a little more upside this time around, as Williams has a chance to be a good defender at multiple spots and an above-average bat/base-runner, and Sproat has number two potential if everything clicks.The Brewers are basically the Rugrats but everyone produces 3 WAR
