On Oct. 15, 2025, the University announced that it would be investing $2 million in a faculty salary market adjustment, exhibited by a flat dollar increase for any faculty member making less than $60,000 annually. That same exact day, I had to unclog a toilet that was filled to the brim with paper towels and a Cheez-It bag. I suppose life has a twisted sense of humor.
I don’t come to work looking for praise. I come to do my job and to make my money just like everyone else. However, if the faculty are, to quote former vice president and provost Jim Dalton, “the heart of this institution,” then, may I ask, what about the rest of us? What about the staff and graduate students who also work here?
Do we not contribute just as much to the University as the faculty here? The groundskeepers help mow the lawns and trim the bushes so that our campus looks good to out-
of-town visitors. The electricians keep the lights on.The teachers would probably be doing twice or triple the amount of work they’re currently doing if it weren’t for their assistants. Baristas serve the students their morning breakfast and coffee before they go to class. Speaking of coffee, custodians clean up the spilled drinks of students where they were not supposed to have their cups in the first place.
Don’t we deserve a decent raise as well? Some of us are working more than one job out here while also raising a family, because the pay that we’re currently making isn’t enough tokeep us afloat nowadays.
I thought I was supposed to feel like a “legend” working here. While I can’t speak for my fellow workers, I can’t say that I’m feeling “legendary” at all. I think a better way to describe how I feel is “left out.”
It is time for the decision makers to do what United Campus Workers has demanded for over a year now: give all campus workers a commensurate raise. Not just the faculty, but all of us.
