This past weekend, the UA Mock Trial Association hosted their 10th annual Crimson Classic tournament in Lloyd and Russell Halls. 35 teams from 25 schools across the Southeast participated, making this the largest tournament hosted by any university so far in the 2025-26 mock trial season.
Mock trial is an organized debate in which teams of students take on the roles of lawyers and witnesses in a simulated courtroom environment. It’s a way for students to learn about real courtroom procedures and to prepare for potential careers in law.
“Mock trial really sharpens presentation skills and the ability to think on your feet,” said Samuel Sellers, a junior majoring in political science and assistant tournament director. “No trial is the same and often evidence or rulings from judges throw off what you prepared for. Maintaining composure and poise is a necessity for high level competitors.”
Multiple UA students won awards in this year’s tournament. Cameron Norton, Ariana Peralta and Nick Massey received Outstanding Attorney Awards, and Nolan Adam received an Outstanding Witness award.
“A lot more work than most people would imagine goes into preparing to compete in a tournament like this,” said Nick Massey, a freshman history and political science major. “Winning an outstanding attorney award was pretty surreal. For a freshman to win one, it really shows all of the work that the organization has put in.”
The first Crimson Classic was created in 2016 due to demand for more tournaments early in the spring mock trial season. The mock trial post-season begins in February.
“Many teams wanted a tournament right before the postseason would begin to practice and hone their skills before Regionals,” Sellers said. “Thus, Dr. Linken, the head of our political science department, recommended that our program host a tournament in mid-January. Ten years later and we’re still providing that for Southern teams.”
Planning for this year’s tournament began in the summer of 2025. Because scoring is done by volunteers from the American Mock Trial Association, the governing body for universities that compete in the activity, the directors had to reach out to over 4,000 potential judges for the tournament.
The Crimson Classic places emphasis on being welcoming to its participants, offering a “Southern Hospitality Room” with snacks, water and tools a competitor might need. The team also provides catered food for volunteer judges.
“The best part about being the head tournament director is getting to work together with all of my friends and watching all of the hard work we’ve put in to successfully bring the tournament to life,” said Taryn Campbell, a junior majoring in criminal justice and criminology and the tournament director. “It has been an honor to work this tournament for the past two years now, and I hope whoever follows me keeps our continued success.”
