Timberwolves Interested in Three Bulls Guards (REPORT)

The Minnesota Timberwolves need to make a move. At 27-17, the Timberwolves currently occupy the No. 7 seed in the crowded Western Conference. But things can change quickly; the Timberwolves are just three games behind the No. 2-seeded San Antonio Spurs.

Every marginal advantage counts. Where San Antonio is loaded with young, big guards who can handle and defend, Minnesota is seeking to address that deficit on its own roster. Rob Dillingham, the eighth overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, hasn’t taken the leap the Timberwolves were hoping to see. And the club has recently had to lean on Bones Hyland for backcourt minutes.

Minnesota’s frontcourt is pretty set, with All-Defensive Team small forward, three-time All-Star power forward, four-time Defensive Player of the Year center Rudy Gobert, and 2024 Sixth Man of the Year Naz Reid all locked-in long-term.

What gives their NBA rivals some leverage, at least, is the reality that they know they need to make a move. And Joe Cowley of The Chicago Sun-Times writes that the Timberwolves are in the market for help next to four-time All-Star shooting guard Anthony Edwards.

It’s pretty clear that Minnesota could use some supplemental playmaking and scoring at the point of attack. Off-guard Donte DiVincenzo has been promoted to a starting role next to Edwards. And, while he’s a serviceable player, Minnesota is eyeing an upgrade.

Enter the Chicago Bulls, who have some potential remedies to Minnesota’s depth concerns.

Bulls — Timberwolves Fits: Coby? Ayo?

According to Cowley, Minnesota has asked Chicago about possible trades for guards Coby White, Ayo Dosunmu, and Tre Jones. While there have been rumblings about a White-to-Minnesota deal for a while, and whispers about Dosunmu, Jones’ inclusion here is new.

The Bulls seemed to make their guard priorities clear in free agency last summer. Chicago inked Jones to a three-year, $24 million deal, and signed starting point guard Josh Giddey to a four-season, $100 million contract. White and Dosunmu are both extension-eligible, but if they don’t reach an agreement with the team by the end of the 2025-26 season (the last day in June), they’ll be unrestricted free agents this summer.

Chicago needs frontcourt help, if anything, not four guards all worthy of minutes. It seems likely at least one of these players is heading out the door soon.

White might be the bigger name, but Dosunmu has quietly been putting together an excellent two-way season, and would likely prove cheaper to retain while supplying better defense.

Dosunmu may lack White’s handle or versatile scoring touch, but he has been scoring at a very efficient clip this year. Through 37 healthy contests, the 26-year-old has been averaging 14.6 points on .518/.461/.864 shooting splits, 3.6 assists and 2.6 rebounds a night. He’s arguably Chicago’s best perimeter defender (with Isaac Okoro) but he’s not necessarily elite.

Still, Dosunmu might be a better fit next to Edwards, who needs the ball in his hands as much as a traditional point guard would.

White has battled through some lingering calf tightness, but has come on a bit of late. He’s been red-hot from deep recently, having gone a whopping 13-of-21 from the field over his last two games. In 22 contests, the North Carolina product has been averaging 18.5 points while slashing .459/.355/.789, plus 4.6 assists (against 3.0 turnovers), 3.5 boards and 0.8 swipes.

    Tre to the Twin Cities?

Jones has impressed with Giddey on the shelf. He’s a great, low-turnover passer. The 6-foot-1 Duke product is a smidge undersized and a streaky 3-point shooter (he’s connecting on just 32.3 percent of his 1.7 long range takes this year overall), but he can score efficiently in the paint and has been a better-than-expected distributor for Chicago.

The 26-year-old has thrived in his 11 games sans Giddey, including nine as a starter. He was recently demoted to a bench role in favor of a two-big lineup featuring Jalen Smith and Nikola Vucevic.

Across those 11 contests with extended minutes and touches, Jones has been averaging 12.9 points on an eye-popping slash line of .607/.409/.926, 7.8 dimes (against 1.4 turnovers), 3.1 rebounds and a steal.

The Timberwolves have some familiarity with the Jones family already. His older brother, now-Orlando Magic reserve Tyus, spent his first four seasons in Minnesota — although he didn’t overlap with any of the current roster, as he’s been elsewhere since 2019-20.

Chicago will get an opportunity to check out Minnesota’s backcourt issues up close and personal on Thursday, when the Bulls will strive to avenge a dismal 136-101 defeat last month that cost them Josh Giddey and, for a time, Coby White — both players left midgame with injuries.
