Here we go again…

If the interview request is granted, it will be the second interview Ian Cunningham will have had with the Falcons. The first came earlier in the month when Cunningham interviewed for the president of football position that was ultimately given to Matt Ryan, the former quarterback who is an icon and fan favorite among Falcons backers. And while Cunningham didn’t get that gig, there seems to be a belief that he would be a favorite for the general manager position because of Ryan’s friendship with Bears General Manager Ryan Poles. If Cunningham is given the OK to interview for the gig, I’d imagine that he would be the favorite.
However, I’m not sure if Ian Cunningham will be allowed to interview. Because while the move from assistant GM to GM would count as a promotion, it might not be seen as one in the eyes of the league.
Because Matt Ryan has the organizational decision-making power in his position as president of football. So while our previous posts have made it a point to underscore that the Bears would be eligible to receive draft pick compensation for Cunningham’s departure for a GM job, it might not be the case it if he left for the Falcons position because of the power dynamic structure in Atlanta. And because of this quirk, I wonder if the Bears would even allow Cunningham to interview for a position that isn’t a true promotion. I suppose we’ll find out in due time.

Frankly, I’m torn about how to feel about this situation. On the one hand it should be taken as a good sign that another team wants GM Ryan Poles’ right-hand man. Plus, I imagine it would feel good for Cunningham to climb up the organizational ranks, get a promotion, and reap all of the benefits that come with it. But on the other hand, I like what Chicago is building with the three-headed monster of Ben Johnson, Ryan Poles, and Ian Cunningham. It would be nice to see it through to the end. But in the end, I understand that it might not be in the cards for Cunningham to stick around. Stay tuned.
