Aurora police urge people to avoid area after shooting involving officer

Residents of a western suburb were asked to avoid an area where police were investigating a shooting involving an officer Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

Around 1 p.m., police responded to the 300 block of South Broadway in Aurora to investigate a “criminal matter,” the Aurora Police Department said in a post on social media.

“Due to the large police presence in the area, we are asking the public to stay clear of the immediate area and use alternate routes as officers continue their investigation,” police said in the post.

Aerial footage from NBC Sky 5 showed over a dozen police vehicles in the area and several officers on foot near the Citgo gas station at the corner of North Avenue and South Broadway.

In a subsequent update, Aurora police added that they were responding to a shooting involving an officer and that there was, at that point, no risk to the public.

Police also said in the post that they would provide more updates.

As of 3:30 p.m., no additional information has been provided.
