Parks and Recreation introduced Chris Pratt to people as the lovable, but not bright, Andy Dwyer. He became an action star after the comedy TV show ended in 2015. Pratt, 46, turned into the raptor trainer Owen Grady in the Jurassic World trilogy. This month, his new movie, Mercy, is a much more serious role than his previous films. But Pratt revealed one thing he took from his time on Parks and Recreation and used it in the A.I. dramatic movie.
Chris Pratt Breaks Props for a ‘Better’ Comedic Scene
Mercy follows detective Chris Raven, accused of murdering his wife, then tries to convince an A.I. judge that he's innocent. Many scenes show Pratt's character trapped in an execution chair. However, there is a scene of the detective drunk in a bar before he gets arrested. The actor told Entertainment Weekly that he saw that scene as an opportunity for a funny moment.
"It was in that sequence where I'm being tackled against a booth at a bar, and my foot just flew up," Pratt explained. He noticed a neon sign in the bar and aimed his foot at it. "And I kicked my feet up high enough to hit a neon sign...I wanted to try to break the sign because of my old Parks and Rec days, like break as much stuff as you can. It's always better," he later said.
The risky move might play out funny on screen, but there was a painful consequence. For one, the sign was part of the real bar and not a prop. Two, it was metal, so he "wrecked" his ankle. Viewers won't see the injury since the character is trapped in a chair for most of his scenes. This story is similar to the time Pratt accidentally broke a light switch by throwing a briefcase at it on the NBC show. The moment is shown in a blooper video, and everyone looks surprised. He said on the "Literally! With Rob Lowe" podcast that throwing the briefcase wasn't scripted.
