In the Instagram post, Couric was seen lying down in a hospital bed as she smiled for a photo with her doctor at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital before heading in for a colonoscopy procedure.
"Hi friends. Getting ready for my colonoscopy," Couric, 69, captioned the post. "Just a reminder, if you’re 45 or over please get screened for colorectal cancer."
View this post on InstagramCouric went on to explain that there has been a "very scary increase in cases among younger people," while advising those who aren't old enough to require a screening to "please be aware of symptoms: unexplained weight loss, change in bowel habits, blood in stools or toilet bowl, bloating."
She continued, "Scientist[s] are trying to figure out why this is happening and there are many theories…I can do another interview about this if you’d like. Right now I'm too tired, thirsty and hungry to go into details but needless to say it's incredibly upsetting."
Couric lost her first husband, Jay Monahan, to colon cancer in January 1998. He was diagnosed in April 1997, and died just nine months later, only 2 weeks after celebrating his 42nd birthday.
In the years since Monahan's death, Couric has continuously used her platform to advocate for cancer awareness, even famously getting a colonoscopy on-air on the Today show in 2000.
She also co-founded the Stand Up to Cancer initiative in 2008 to help fun cancer research.
In her post on Wednesday, Couric asked fans to "wish [her] luck" before heading into the exam, while also urging her followers, "please talk to your doctor if you haven’t been screened."
She also added that today is her current husband John Molner's birthday, while quipping, "but let’s save that for a different post!"
" Okay, Couric out. (Literally) ❤️" she further joked.
"PS my doctor @spencerzacharymom is the absolute best. She runs the Monahan Center at @weillcornell named after Jay," Couric added, noting that she knows she "will be in good hands" during the procedure.
