The Arizona Cardinals are conducting a second interview with Jaguars defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile for their head-coaching vacancy on Thursday, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
The NFL insider’s report is the first time that Campanile’s involvement as a candidate in the search has been made public knowledge. Barring any sudden changes, he would be the first candidate to complete two interviews with the team after Robert Saleh took the Tennessee Titans’ head coach opening before his scheduled second look.
But who exactly is Anthony Campanile and what has he done to earn such an extended presence within Arizona’s pursuit to find its next head coach?
Previous Coaching Experience
Campanile, a New Jersey native, played safety and linebacker for four seasons at Rutgers before beginning his coaching career as a linebackers coach at his alma mater Fair Lawn High School. He returned to Rutgers as a defensive assistant in 2012 where he’d also become a tight ends coach and wide receivers coach.

After bouncing around to Boston College and Michigan from 2016-2019, the Miami Dolphins hired Campanile as the team’s linebackers coach in 2020. He served in the role for four seasons under Brian Flores and Mike McDaniel until he joined Green Bay in 2024 to serve a similar role as well as become a run game coordinator.
In just one year, Campanile helped the Packers rank sixth in points allowed (19.9) and improve from fifth-worst in rushing yards allowed (128.3) to seventh-best (99.4).
First-Time Defensive Coordinator
Campanile’s impact in Wisconsin was impressive enough for Liam Coen to offer him a defensive coordinator position in Jacksonville before the 2025 season. Campanile, in his first time becoming a defensive coordinator since he coached at Don Bosco Preparatory nearly 20 years ago, took a unit that gave up the fifth-most points (25.6) in the league and transformed it into the eighth-best in points allowed (19.8).
The Jaguars’ top-ranked rushing defense only gave up 79 yards per game on average, and the team also recorded the second-most takeaways (32). The near-immediate revitalization under Campanile played a large part in Jacksonville’s nine-win improvement and third AFC South title.
Rising Star
Jeff Hafley, former Packers defensive coordinator and new Dolphins head coach, spoke highly of Campanile in a February 2024 press conference.
Anthony Campanile, who I think is a star. I think he’s going to bring energy. I think he is a brilliant football coach.
Campanile has been heavily praised for his innovative approach in running Jacksonville’s defense this past season. His scheme operates out of zone 78.6% of all snaps with occasional pivots to a man-heavy approach, and his tendency to go light in the box (49.9%) means that he prefers to blitz (25.8%) in order to create pressure and force turnovers.
He’s also shown that he can bring the energy when needed as shown by his appearance on in-season Hard Knocks back in 2023 (Warning: Profanity).
Who’s in Pursuit?
Arizona isn’t the only team that has expressed interest in Campanile as a head-coaching candidate. The Baltimore Ravens completed an in-person interview with him on Tuesday, and the Dolphins sat down with their former linebackers coach on Jan. 16 before hiring Hafley.
Despite only five years of NFL experience including one as a defensive coordinator on his resume, the 43-year-old coach operates in a league where 10 current head coaches are younger than 50. Six teams including the Cardinals still have vacant positions, and Campanile’s body of work thus far has been more than impressive enough to have a franchise wonder if he’s the right man for the job.
